I recently recovered three tree rings from a 100+ year old tree
that was felled in my neighborhood. I've sanded the disks down
smooth so the rings and rays look really sharp! I was thinking
of ways to incorporate them into a 2-3 combo science theme
where I use estimating and rounding for math, adaptation for
science, and perhaps charting historic events for history.

What might be some other ideas to enhance the theme?

Many thanks!

I taught outdoor education with kids for many years. One really neat thing
to do is to insert some pushpins at some important rings and mark off
historic dates on the rings. You can use pointers and string depending on
how big the tree ring is.
Some of the important dates might be: eruption of Mt. St Helens (1980)
World War II, the birthdays of the students in the class.

One other suggestion using the width of the rungs as a history lesson on
climate. The greater the width between the rings, the better the growth
year.

You can extend this into studying ice cores in Greenland.

Talk to a local forester for more information.

Creativity rules!

Have fun!
