The plant you sent to the herbarium for identification looks like a black-eyed susan/coneflower (Rudbeckia fulgida). Very probably, this was planted in your yard as I doesn't grow naturally in the vicinity. It is one of the more popular perennial plants available
in the "native" plant market. As to your question about bee balm, I would really only suggest the native perennial species, which is Monarda fistulosa. Another perennial that is native to southeastern Kansas is Monarda bradburiana. There are two annual species
that are grown widely but are not native to the Kansas City area: Monarda punctata and Monarda citriodora.
