Tanzania: JK - Religions Documents Dangerous
The Citizen (Dar es Salaam)
President Jakaya Kikwete said yesterday he was "deeply concerned" by
religious documents on next year's General Election.
>>>>>>>>Well religious issues have been there since the president's 1st year in office and nothing was done. Now thatelection's are around the corner we should believe that there is genuine concern??<<<<<<<<<
Answering questions during a live television phone-in programme last
night, he said the Government would soon meet with religious leaders
to discuss the issue.
"The recent CCM NEC (National Executive Council) meeting directed us -
that is me, the Vice-President and Prime Minister - to meet with the
religious leaders we have already started preparations for the
meeting.
>>>>>>>>Hmmm...so who is really in charge then?...can u say leadership vacuum!<<<<<<<<
"My request to religious leaders is that we should wait for this
meeting and they should in the meantime desist from issuing any more
documents. The NEC also directed that party leaders should not
participate in public debates on the documents," he said.
The Head of State said he was worried that the documents could
polarise voters and divide the nation after next year year's General
Election.
"My worry is that people will go into the elections and vote as
Christians or Muslims. In such a situation, you can expect people to
be divided along religious lines based on those who won and those who
lost. This is dangerous," he said.
On education, he said the Government would use its own funds to
address the shortage of teachers' houses.
>>>>>>>>Is that all the education needs??...maybe if teachers were paid much better or maybe as much as MPs then we wouldn't be worried about baiting teachers with free housing! Maybe if we improve the standards at the teachers colleges and funded them adequately & consistently education would improve!<<<<<<<<<<
He added that the decision had been inspired by the successful
implementation of the Lake Victoria Water Project, which was wholly
funded by the Government.
>>>>>>>>WHAT?!...this was a UN initiated and largely funded by them and other donors!...by the way this project was started in 2004 in the EA lake regions and has never met its goals. In addition the UN itself issued a climate report stating that water levels in the lake have dropped more the 6 ft in the last 3 years, that's a lot of h2o considering lake Victoria cover an area larger than Rwanda and Burundi combined!...the bar for successful projects must be really low, if this what we call a successful project.<<<<<<<<<
President Kikwete said that some donors, including the African
Development Bank and the US, had agreed to assist the Government in
the construction of laboratories and publishing of books for secondary
schools.
>>>>>>>>We need specialized labs to be built for secondary school books??...and of course donors need to take care of this too!
Interestingly, I recently I learned that a friend had written a book
about personal finance and published it. I wonder what international
donors she had to kneel in front of to get this done.
We have the capability to do this if its really needed, has the
government even tried to approach its own people first?<<<<<<<<<<
