New issue 4055 by nodeisk...@gmail.com: unable to import settings.k9s on
galaxy nexus
http://code.google.com/p/k9mail/issues/detail?id=4055

Is this a bug or a support request? If it's a support request, please join
the discussion mailing list at http://groups.google.com/group/k-9-mail and
ask there.

This is a bug.

What's going wrong?

K-9 mail 4.005 is unable to import the settings.k9s, which I exported
from my HTC incredible.

Have you looked for another ticket that might already be about your bug?
If not, visit http://code.google.com/p/k9mail/issues/searchtips before
submitting this bug report.

Yes.

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. moved settings.k9s from Downloads to com.fsck.k9/
2. launched k-9 and entered dummy account to get past setup screen
3. Menu->More->Settings Import & Export->Import Settings

What do you expect to have happen?

My settings to be imported.

What do you see instead?

"Select an action" menu pops up, only option is "no applications can
perform this action"

What version of K-9 are you using?

4.005

Is your email account a POP account, Exchange Account or an IMAP account?

IMAP

In order for us to have a chance at helping you with a complex issue, we're
going to need a debug log from your phone. You can dramatically increase
the chances of a quick and successful resolution to this issue by following
the directions at https://github.com/k9mail/k-9/wiki/LoggingErrors -- If
you can't give us a trace, there's a pretty good chance that we won't be
able to act on your bug report.

If you really want a trace let me know, I'm guessing this is an ICS thing.

What else should we know?

I manually copied this file off my HTC incredible, emailed it to myself
and moved the file from /bin/sh. I'm not sure how else to put it on there
now that ICS doesn't support USB drive emulation, only MTP/PTP.

Thanks that makes sense, I figured I was missing something but failed to
find it in my search results.

Maybe you want to add these notes (included below) to the Wiki -> Manual ->
Setting up an email account page? I left 2 questions with <--! to mark
them, I figured you guys could clarify those.

I didn't find a lot of information on the web or in the wiki. If you want
screenshots of any of these steps please let me know. They'll be in ICS,
though I don't think it makes much difference in these steps.

Thank you for your time and effort!

Exporting.

1. Goto the main "Accounts" screen. If you have trouble getting there goto
Menu -> More -> Accounts.

2. Hit Menu -> More -> Settings Import & Export -> Export Settings and
Accounts

3. A dialog pops up to inform you that your export succeeded and where to
find your settings.k9s XML file.

Importing.

1. If you don't already have an account configured you'll probably have to
create a dummy account to get through to the main "Accounts" screen. <--!
editor is this correct or is there a way around the setup wizard?

2. Once in the main "Accounts" screen hit Menu -> More -> Settings Import &
Export -> Import Settings

3. At this point K-9 uses an file manager intent (<--! editor more specific
if possible? ) to locate your settings.k9s file. Recently OI File Manager
was recommended to me, it has no advertising and only asks for sdcard
permissions.

4. K-9 will confirm which accounts you want to import and prompt for the
password, since that isn't stored in the settings backup file.

5. If you're using a self-signed certificate for SSL or TLS you'll want to
go into the incoming and outgoing server settings. You click Next and K-9
will test the settings, at which point you can accept the certificate. You
will probably need to do this with both incoming and outgoing servers. If
you skip this step you will get a
"java.security.CertPathValidatorException" error and you won't be able to
send or receive email.

Comment #4 on issue 4055 by jff...@gmail.com: unable to import settings.k9s

Same problem, unable to import HTC Incredible

Saved settings for 6 accounts (pop, aol, aol, aol, gmail (No active sync)
Reset the phone
Loaded K9 and set up a dummy account
Attempted import, no application found; so I downloaded AIO File Manager
2nd attempt to import, (menu > more > settings import & export > import
settings > file mgr locate on sd card com.fsck.k9 > select settings-x.k9s >
received confirmation that an aol account to be imported > Import failed
Failed to import any settings from setting-4.k9s.

So I enabled logs doing above.

Android 4.08.605.2 on Verizon
K9 version 4.0005

I also made a copy of those .k9s files and moved them to another folder in
case the import was trying to write somethig to that same area. Again
tried the import, and it failed the same way.

Interesting, same platform, same device, same version. But it could be a
coincidence. I was going to write down all the settings before my factory
reset, but finding the export feature, I foolishly didn't write them down.
Oops on me.

Just wanted to say. using OI File Manager worked for me. Astro file
maanger does not seem to see .k9s files.

I had Samsung Galaxy S on Gingerbread. Backed up K9 account settings.

Installed Ice Cream Sandwich onto same phone.
Looked for Account settings with Astro, didn't work!.
Uninstalled Astro File Manager.
Installed OI File Manager.
Was able to import settings.
Then got rid of Oi file manager and reinstalled Astro after finished
importing.

Seconded - and awesome, thanks for the suggestion, it worked or me.
Installing OI file manager did the trick for me too. For some reason Astro
can navigate to the correct folder, but cannot see the settings files, and
thinks the folder is empty.
Note you don't have to uninstall Astro - just install OI File Manager as a
second file manager. In K9, after selecting 'Import Settings' Android will
throw up a selection box to choose which file manager to use - select OI
File Manager and restore the settings, Then just uninstall OI File Manager
afterwards.

This was a stock Samsung Galaxy SII running Android 2.3.6 and K9 v4.006
installed fresh a few hours ago.

In order to get to the import menu on a new k9 install first you have to
first create a dummy account. When you start k9 the first time it
automatically goes into the new account screen. Just fill in some random
settings just to get past that screen. Once you're in the main menu you
can import your accounts and then lastly delete the dummy account.

It's extra work but takes just a minute. If that new account page had an
import option we could skip this work around.

I've got this same issue however I've tried all the fixes in the thread and
still can not import the settings file.

I exported the settings from my HTC EVO and am unsuccessfully trying to
import to Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 i get a force close type message about 30
seconds after i click the settings file to import.

See attached screen shot

thats not enough of the debug log. the important parts are missing.
please attach a full debug log of the crash.
https://github.com/k9mail/k-9/wiki/LoggingErrors

it's important to not filter for k9 on "Force-Close" errors. (otherwise the
important stuff is lost)

Hello! Sorry not meaning to be a pain.

I used these instructions and in step three used aLogCat.
https://github.com/k9mail/k-9/wiki/LoggingErrors

in #2 in step three it said, "In aLogcat press the menu button and
select "Filter". Enter (k9|AndroidRuntime), check Apply as a regular
expression?, and press "Okay"."

which I did on the last post. This post I removed the "k9|AndroidRuntime"
filter and here's what I got (attached txt file).

hi
you are right, we have to update our FAQ article.

from the debug log it's not clear to me why this ForceClose happens.
Can you try installing the latest development verion of k9?
http://code.google.com/p/k9mail/downloads/list
should be K9 4.121.

does the settings import took 30sec or does it finish and k9 hangs
afterwards?
