Comment #26 on issue 17 by kroko...@gmail.com: Hierarchical folder list /

http://code.google.com/p/k9mail/issues/detail?id=17

I have IMAP folders with names like "Projects/AAA", "Projects/BBB"
(actually these are labels in GMail). My Apple Mail automatically shows
them as a tree with "Projects" branch and "AAA","BBB" as leaves. I think
this is the way K9 Mail should be showing them as well.

I am not sure how generic this conventions. Perhaps "/" separator should be
configurable and user should be able to switch on and off tree display.

Sounds like fairly simple feature to implement, at list in display of a
list of folders.

Comment #27 on issue 17 by Marcus.W...@googlemail.com: Hierarchical folder

Problem with this is:
The user can use the keyboard to filter the view.
With filtering a subfolder can be visible without it's parent-folders also
being in the result-set.
Same with the "1st class, 2nd class and 3rd class -only" -Filters via the
menu.
Not trivial to implement.

@Marcus, the filter function sounds great, but it is apparently not
available to those of us without a hard kbd. Or can it be activated
somehow? If not, let's make that a feature request for K9 in future!

Back on topic, I would still very much like to see a tree structured
directory, which is standard functionality for IMAP clients. I suggest
that the folder list have 2 modes, Browse and Search: in Browse mode, you
get a tree structure to navigate (but no filter); in Search mode, you get
the flat list, with the ability to filter.

And @kroko..., the folder separator definitely needs to be configurable, as
different servers can use different characters (mine uses ".", for reasons
I don't understand).

Works fine here without a hardware keyboard.
Just hold gthe menu-key until the keyboard slides up
and DONT use Swype (that crap does not send individual keys and thus breaks
all filters and all AutoCompleteTextFields on the phone).

OK, I didn't know that I could get a keyboard with long press on Menu, so
thanks for that.

But, it doesn't work for me as you describe. Most keystrokes seem to be
ignored, with exception of "s" which brings up K9's "general settings"
screen (this is while the folder list is displayed).

I've HTC Desire, Android 2.1, without any special keyboard drivers.

I know "me too" bugspam isn't appreciated but I am frustrated that this
enhancement request is 2 years old, unimplemented, and still set to "low"
priority. Like others, this is probably my biggest usability issue in K9.
There needs to be a way to collapse subfolders when working with the list
of folders. I have a lot of nested folders, and having to select from them
in one big flat list is a huge usability block.

There's no reason this can't be done with a touchscreen-only device.
Several possibilities come immediately to mind.

Does anyone know of an example in an android app where data is displayed in
a usable treeview?

However I must note that the K9 folder view is much better than the stock
mail program's folder view, which tends to chop off the important part of
the folder name.

It seems that ListView-filtering (long-pressing the menu key for the

but not in the folder-list. :(

Comment #40 on issue 17 by k...@green-experts.net: Hierarchical folder list

Seeing as how this issue has been going on for almost two years, and is
still listed as "low" priority, I started looking around for another email
client that DOES have a proper folder tree view.

Like many others here, I have a lot (over 100) IMAP folders in a tree
structure, so a single very long list is practically unusable.

At any rate, the program I found is called Maildroid, and can be found at
the following link (it is also available in the market):

http://slideme.org/application/maildroid

It of course does the proper folder treeview we are all looking for, and a
lot of other things as well! Follow the link or check out the listing in
the market for a full list of features.

I would definately consider myself an advanced email user and although I
have only been using it a short time, I have been extremely happy with
Maildroid so far. I have been searching around for a proper IMAP email
client for quite a while now, and I am very happy to report that I think I
have finally found it!

I am in no way affilliated with Maildroid, I'm just another user frustrated
with the lack of a folder tree view in K-9 (or any other client, for that
matter) and I came across this thread in my search, and so that's why I
decided to post here. I hope my post helps someone else like myself. Cheers!

Folder handling in K9 is broken and has been for a long time in spite of
the user feedback (and the basic functionality of practically every decent
mail client on the planet!). If the developers don't care about that, then
that's their choice.

I've now moved to maildroid mainly for folder handling, but it has plenty
of other nice features in both free and paid versions. Definitely
recommended for others with this frustration.

It already does that filtering (as witten above).
Just long-press Menu until the keyboard is there and start typing.
It does "pull up all folders" on account-creations and then regularly.
No need to wait for an answer from the server to select a folder.

My work account has folders for each contact and employee I've communicated

Reply to comments 49 and 50:

Maybe the lack of seeing subfolders is something specific to Exchange, and
is probably worth having a separate issue filed for it (I suspect it's a
different problem).

Using Zimbra as an IMAP server, I can see all of the subfolders, but
they're all listed inline in the main folder list, as a full path to the
folder. Getting the tree view for that (rather than the list of full
paths) I think was the point of this bug.

Although I'm not familiar with cketti's patch to know if he covered the
Exchange case or not (perhaps with Exchange you have to query each
top-level folder for a list of its subfolders)

I just spent a few hours today implementing a hierarchical folder list (no

- very lightly tested, might break all kinds of things
- only does folder browsing, not for moving e-mail yet
- cannot look at e-mail in folders that also contain subfolders

Update, new revision also shows the FolderList activity (instead of the
traditional ChooseFolder activity) to select the destination folder when
moving/copying an e-mail.

Is there any chance to have a full integration of hierarchical folder list
/ folder tree in K9 soon. The integration in Maildroid http://goo.gl/qQrVl4
for example is close to perfect.

As far as the code I have written is concerned, there is some further
discussion (and screenshots) on github:

I like K-9 also but can't work with the flat folder structure. My folder
structure has parts that look like this
A-M
America
...america files
Big-ones
files related to big one
C
C files
...
M directory
Files staring with M
M1
m2
m.m
N-Z Directory
N1
N1 file 1
N1 file 2
.... Z directory
z files
More directories

When looking at folders (flat) I see a huge list. When I look at a file in
the middle and want to move on I have to start over completely.

I would rather see a Folder. Click on it to see sub folders. move back and
forth.

Great mail options but folder structure is almost unusable.

A problem related to this is:
I have 2 accounts. First is gmail - no issues as my gmail is pretty flat.
2nd is an IMAP account with a large folder and sub folder structure.

When I look at my mail on Thunderbird (PC) it filters my mail and puts it
into the appropriate folders. Mail on ThunderBird is still marked unread
and easy to find.

If I close Thunderbird on PC (mail is still unread but filtered into
folders) and open K-9 on android the new unread mail is impossible to find
unless I look in that folder.

It doesn't show up in unified (unread) mailbox.
It doesn't show up highlighted in the flat folder list.
I leave maul unread if i want to find it quickly.

Am I missing something?

I've used k-9 for quite some time now, and have never found the folder
display an issue. I have an imap setup with over 200 folders, all nested to
various depths (currently at least a depth of 5 that I can see).

My display shows something along the lines of
Folder 1
Folder 1.Folder 2
Folder 1.Folder 2.Folder 3
...der 2.Folder 3.Folder 4
Folder 5

Since I therefore know the exact location of any folder by the folders
above it, I do not see how a treeview appearance would make any
difference. It might make you more familiar with the display, but I'm not
sure it would make it practically any more usuable. My screen is small,
and I think a folder tree would not display very well.

What are people thinking would actually be useful? Maybe a little more
detail in people's suggestions might encourage development. If you want a
list of top folders, which when you tap a name it opens that folder and
then displays only an 'up to parent' and the list of subfolders, I think
that would make filing items extremely time consuming. No fast scroll
would work then...

to @bto...@gmail.com 's question not related to this thread,
I don't use unified mailbox, but are you sure that you have set the folder
to poll for unread mail. By default only top level folders are set to
check for mail, and I don't think many, if any, are set to PUSH
(automatically be told there is new mail by the server). In the folder(s)
in question you need to click settings > folder settings. You need to
check the display / sync class actually match a check setting in settings >
account settings > fetching mail > poll folders and folder poll frequency.

Mine certainly shows me unread messages in all my folders - once it has
checked for them, and successfully receives PUSHed messages into the couple
of folders I have chosen that for (battery and bandwidth draining).

Using:
Android 4.0.4
K-9 4.803
Sony Xperia U

Comment #79 on issue 17 by bto...@gmail.com: Hierarchical folder list /

http://code.google.com/p/k9mail/issues/detail?id=17

After reading your comments about folders versus flat folder display it
makes sense and I realize that my issue is not the folder structure. It is
really trying to find new unread messages. My "main" email client on the PC
platform is Thunderbird which filters my email. When I use K9, I can't find
that email.

IE, I can't find the needle in the haystack - the one folder with unread
email near the bottom.

You suggested - In the folder(s) in question you need to click settings
folder settings. I went to a sub folder that I KNOW has unread email in it.
I selected the folder (K9). I selected Settings. Under Settings I see:
Folder Settings, account settings and Global Settings. I selected Folder
settings. see below

You need to check the display / sync class actually match a check setting
in settings account settings fetching mail poll folders and folder poll
frequency.
My choices are:
Show in top group no check mark in box
Folder display class
Folder sync class
Folder push class
Unify no check mark in box

So - looking in Folder display class - "none" is selected
- looking in Folder Sync class - "Same as display class" is selected

The relevant "account settings" are Poll folders - only in first class
folders. and Poll every 15 minutes.

It looks like if I change "Poll folders" to All then this will do it. Is
that really the best way to fix this? I have a lot of mail and folders....
I will try this. Am wondering if this is going create too much
processing???

What I really need is K9 to show me quickly where unread email resides
without looking down a huge list.

[New stuff]
I made the change to "all" and it took forever to process all the mail. I
researched folder classes. The more I look at it the more confusing the
options get.

OBJECTIVE:
I want to see ALL email, but only want to see SOME "new mail" in SOME
folders. If I go to the top account, I think "none" is the correct setting
for Folder Display class option to start with so I see all email.

Now I want to change the sync settings so that I see "new" mail in some
folders that I want. I have lots of folders and only want to "sync" some. I
have options here.

Say I have
inbox
A
A.1
A.2
A.3
A.3.1
A.3.2
B
C
C.1
C.2
C.3
C.4

How do I go about (best way?)syncing so that I see new mail in:
inbox
A.2
A.3.2
B
C.3
In actual fact I have many sub folders, and several that I want to see, but
in most cases, I can I want:
inbox
an entire folder
the odd sub folder within a folder.

The biggest confusion is not screwing up a setting that will affect
everything.

Thanks again
Bob

Perhaps one of the previous comments answered this but my problem with a
large number of nested folders is that if I add a folder or move it to
another location in thunderbird these changes don't show up in K9mail

K9mail doesn't automatically refresh the folder list. You had to tell it
to refresh. While you're looking at your folder list, hit the Menu button
and pick "Refresh folder list" to pick up the changes on the server.

I have a samsung tab and a samsung s3 both using k9mail.
The samsung tab k9mail shows and refreshes all of my hotmail folders.
The s3 only shows the inbox/outbox/sent/drafts but no subfolders.
I have tried playing with push settings and refreshing the folders list,
but nothing changes.

What do I have to do to see all of the folders on the s3 .?.?

Check your configuration. As the last resort you can backup working
configuration and restore it on s3

I have the solution for viewing hotmail subfolders:

My old s3 had the incoming server set to pop3.live.com with port 995,
but the tab had been set up more recently as imap-mail.outlook.com with
port 993

I changed to the newer settings and now all of the subfolders are visible
and pollable :)

I'd also like to see a better handling of subfolders. At the moment I only
see
the folderrs spaces by a ".", very confusing. An expandable tree view would
be
welcome. Also the possibility to create subfolders.

Looks like this one has been on the radar for a few years. I've recently
returned to K-9 to see whats new. The Stock Android email app has some
nice features, but has a few key things missing. Grouping emails by
read/unread, date, sender, etc is one of its strengths over K-9. it makes
it easier to select all emails for one day to sort out and selectively
delete junk. This would be a big help in K-9.
