Comment #24 on issue 17 by cketti: Hierarchical folder list / folder tree
http://code.google.com/p/k9mail/issues/detail?id=17
(No comment was entered for this change.)
Issue 2204 has been merged into this issue.
I have IMAP folders with names like "Projects/AAA", "Projects/BBB"
(actually these are labels in GMail). My Apple Mail automatically shows
them as a tree with "Projects" branch and "AAA","BBB" as leaves. I think
this is the way K9 Mail should be showing them as well.
I am not sure how generic this conventions. Perhaps "/" separator should be
configurable and user should be able to switch on and off tree display.
Sounds like fairly simple feature to implement, at list in display of a
list of folders.
Problem with this is:
The user can use the keyboard to filter the view.
With filtering a subfolder can be visible without it's parent-folders also
being in the result-set.
Same with the "1st class, 2nd class and 3rd class -only" -Filters via the
menu.
Not trivial to implement.
@Marcus, the filter function sounds great, but it is apparently not
available to those of us without a hard kbd. Or can it be activated
somehow? If not, let's make that a feature request for K9 in future!
Back on topic, I would still very much like to see a tree structured
directory, which is standard functionality for IMAP clients. I suggest
that the folder list have 2 modes, Browse and Search: in Browse mode, you
get a tree structure to navigate (but no filter); in Search mode, you get
the flat list, with the ability to filter.
And @kroko..., the folder separator definitely needs to be configurable, as
different servers can use different characters (mine uses ".", for reasons
I don't understand).
And, point of order, what would it take to get this issue raised above the
current "Low" priority level?

Works fine here without a hardware keyboard.
Just hold gthe menu-key until the keyboard slides up
and DONT use Swype (that crap does not send individual keys and thus breaks
all filters and all AutoCompleteTextFields on the phone).
OK, I didn't know that I could get a keyboard with long press on Menu, so
thanks for that.
But, it doesn't work for me as you describe. Most keystrokes seem to be
ignored, with exception of "s" which brings up K9's "general settings"
screen (this is while the folder list is displayed).
I've HTC Desire, Android 2.1, without any special keyboard drivers.
It only works in "choose folder" (e.g. when you move or copy an email),
not in the folder-list.
I know "me too" bugspam isn't appreciated but I am frustrated that this
enhancement request is 2 years old, unimplemented, and still set to "low"
priority. Like others, this is probably my biggest usability issue in K9.
There needs to be a way to collapse subfolders when working with the list
of folders. I have a lot of nested folders, and having to select from them
in one big flat list is a huge usability block.
There's no reason this can't be done with a touchscreen-only device.
Several possibilities come immediately to mind.
Patches are welcome. And I believe the bounty for this is still valid. See

Issue 2533 has been merged into this issue.
Yes, the bounty is still active.
Does anyone know of an example in an android app where data is displayed in
a usable treeview?
However I must note that the K9 folder view is much better than the stock
mail program's folder view, which tends to chop off the important part of
the folder name.
I was looking for something similar to ASTRO file manager in behaviour.
It seems that ListView-filtering (long-pressing the menu key for the
keyboard to come up and then typing) works well in the select-folder view
(e.g. move message to folder)
but not in the folder-list. :(
Seeing as how this issue has been going on for almost two years, and is
still listed as "low" priority, I started looking around for another email
client that DOES have a proper folder tree view.
Like many others here, I have a lot (over 100) IMAP folders in a tree
structure, so a single very long list is practically unusable.
At any rate, the program I found is called Maildroid, and can be found at
the following link (it is also available in the market):
http://slideme.org/application/maildroid
It of course does the proper folder treeview we are all looking for, and a
lot of other things as well! Follow the link or check out the listing in
the market for a full list of features.
I would definately consider myself an advanced email user and although I
have only been using it a short time, I have been extremely happy with
Maildroid so far. I have been searching around for a proper IMAP email
client for quite a while now, and I am very happy to report that I think I
have finally found it!
I am in no way affilliated with Maildroid, I'm just another user frustrated
with the lack of a folder tree view in K-9 (or any other client, for that
matter) and I came across this thread in my search, and so that's why I
decided to post here. I hope my post helps someone else like myself. Cheers!
I too have hundrets of folders and found the added support for
Android-filtering
(hold menu until the keyboard apears and start typing) in the select-folder
dialog
and the menu->show only primary folders to be much faster then any folder
tree.
Folder handling in K9 is broken and has been for a long time in spite of
the user feedback (and the basic functionality of practically every decent
mail client on the planet!). If the developers don't care about that, then
that's their choice.
I've now moved to maildroid mainly for folder handling, but it has plenty
of other nice features in both free and paid versions. Definitely
recommended for others with this frustration.
It already does that filtering (as witten above).
Just long-press Menu until the keyboard is there and start typing.
It does "pull up all folders" on account-creations and then regularly.
No need to wait for an answer from the server to select a folder.
Because with a hardware-keyboard you probably just start typing and don't
HAVE an on-screen-keyboard?

Not working on a Samsung Fascinate, Android 2.2 on Verizon. Current
version of K-9. I go to the message, select the "Move" button at the
bottom and get a list of the folders. When I long-press the Menu key, I
get nothing.
My work account has folders for each contact and employee I've communicated
with, which means literally hundreds of folders. Collapsing and expanding
them would be a big help -- allowing me to request to save, and then have
the app pull up all folders matching my search text would be even better.
Nope...it's a software keyboard. Not sure if the bug is related to my OS,
other software, or whatever, but it's not working on my Samsung Fascinate.
I'm starting to look at this one.
I'm using a Galaxy Tab 10.1 and K9 to sync with my corporate Exchange, and
I can only see the first level of e-mail folders. As far as I can see there
is no support for syncing or browsing any subfolder I have under my
Exchange inbox and this is really a show-stopper for me
Hello, i'm using a gigabyte g1310 and I have the same problem of pertorbe..
The possibility to see the subfolders could make the app perfect.
cketti made a patch for it ...
but for now it is not compiled ...
if wanted you can use my version - meanwhile ...
it is posted on xda-developers ...
it was also tread
http://code.google.com/p/k9mail/issues/detail?id=1992&can=1&q=namespace&colspec=ID%20Product%20Type%20Status%20Priority%20Milestone%20Owner%20Summary
or you can wait 1-2 weeks til it will be released
and from my point of view, this issue(feature request) can be closed
Reply to comments 49 and 50:
Maybe the lack of seeing subfolders is something specific to Exchange, and
is probably worth having a separate issue filed for it (I suspect it's a
different problem).
Using Zimbra as an IMAP server, I can see all of the subfolders, but
they're all listed inline in the main folder list, as a full path to the
folder. Getting the tree view for that (rather than the list of full
paths) I think was the point of this bug.
Although I'm not familiar with cketti's patch to know if he covered the
Exchange case or not (perhaps with Exchange you have to query each
top-level folder for a list of its subfolders)
please can you test this version ?
see: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20000870
please let us know, if anyone do haing problem or if it is fixed now with
this version
I`d love to but I only get "application not installed" when I try to
update it on my Samsung Galaxy Tab
list / folder tree
this version
yes, this is an old bug ...
please uninstall it and then install it again
(before you can backup your old k9mail + save your settings, and then you
can install it. after install you can restore the data (via titanium) or
you can import the settings. (i did it with titanium backup, and then
restore only the data of k9-mail)
I have installed the new version but it still only show the first level of
folders and it doesnt fetch my mails at all. I have also tried removing all
settings and configutre it from scratch with the same result.

can you try it also on IMAP, because there it is working fine.
which profile do you use ?
webdav ? or imap ?
auto namespace must be disabled
It Exchange/webdav and that's the only one available from the server.
list / folder tree
Please take this discussion to the mailing list. This is not a support
thread. It's about a hierarchical display of the folder list. Which is
completely unrelated to missing folders with WebDAV (please see issue 1834)
or IMAP namespaces (issue 1992).
I installed the new version and I am not getting a tree style view of my
folders.
as cketti told .....> this are 2 different issues/feature request ...
we don't should mix it ....
-> missing folders with WebDAV (issue 1834)
-> IMAP namespaces (full folder structure) (issue 1992)
Is there any news about the folders being viewed in a more tree like
structure?
I notice Comment 40 . . .
Some what discouraging.
No, sorry. I still have a flat folderstructure and it contains only the top
level folders.
Here is a patch to at least filter the folder-list on devices that no
longer have a menu-key to do so.
It adds a new menu-item "search folder" to the "folder"-menu and has a
German and English translation.
Translations for the other languages need to be added.
