Issue 1261 has been merged into this issue.
This enhancement request is almost 2y old and has not ever had a single
comment on it. So, sorry for the bugspam, but... can we have an update on
the status of this? It's been accepted... any reason for the delay?
It's a valid feature but nobody has gotten around to implement it yet.
Patches are welcome.
My 0.02 = why make a mobile version for an email client bloated??? That's
why you have an desktop mail client, like Thunderbird or Outlook. A mobile
mail client user, on the other hand, wouldn't need to create new folders
regularly on a day-by-day basis. It's a feature that is needed
occasionally, but not everyday. Let's continue to keep that in mind when
choosing new features to add to K9. Let's not get carried away with so
many bells and whistles that it slows down the performance advantage as a
mobile tool.
Not needed often, but crucial occasionally, eg when trying to save an
accidentally-deleted message
I am a new user and would appreciate clarification regarding folders. The
K-9 that I recently loaded on Droid-X, has 3 folders: inbox, outbox, and
trash. Is there any way to add any additional folders?
Thanks for your response.
DAT
@datheod: Currently it's not possible to create new folders.
As constant traveller, I need this 'user_set_folders' badly, to keep mails
handy and easy to find!
As a regular user of K-9 mail, I need this option badly too, to better
organize my mails, like I do in desttop Outlook.
So please make this a HIGH priority please.
many thanks!
I need it for eg, advanced booking confirmations or directions that I want
to keep but don't want clogging up the Inbox. Just one Saved folder would
do. Thanks
People coming over from Blackberry like myself are accustomed to having a
saved email folder. Adding this feature would make the transition from
Blackberry better.
If you're setup in an IMAP environment, you can create additional folders
with your regular email client, or webmail. Not sure what to do if you're
using POP.
Even a "saved mail" folder would be appreciated
An obvious component of this feature is the ability to move messages
between folders.

This is far from being a bloat feature. I'm actually fairly shocked that it
isn't supported.
actually with the addition of tablets this becomes an even more desired
feature add I find myself using the Xoom more than my laptop.
1st I enjoyed outlook on win moble, the only thing I liked. In todays age,
we are now tied to our phones, tabs and/or whatever that does not require
use to sit at a desk. On the go connected to the airwaves. In saying that
having the ability to create folders to organize the numerous emails will
not bloat the program but make it more user friendly and also give those of
use that don't just email as a form of communication but as a way of living
and connect to clients and professionals, a way to keep track. Having to
look though an entire inbox is cumbersome when looking for references or
what ever. We could always do this on our desktops but we have to be there
to do it. This should move up on the priority list.
Why not setup multiple folders on your mail server. I don't see the
critical advantage of having the ability to add and delete folders multiple
times throughout the day. I handle and organize many emails everyday and
couldn't imagine wasting the time needed to create and delete multiple
folders. It's much more efficient to create a group of folders to cycle
through and move emails to those folders as needed. Also there's a 'star'
feature that is very useful for marking important emails. K9 also allows
some sorting of emails by stars. One could take it a step further and keep
emails as unread as reminders to review them later.
The point is that there are many methods we all adopt as our efficient
organizing preferences, but many of us, in fact the majority of us, do not
organize our emails by multiple folder creations throughout the day. You
might want to try a better mail server platform that offers more features.
Gmail is one of many excellent choices. Plus you can use filtering rules to
help you remain organized throughout your day.
Please don't insist on bloating this awesome mobile mail client and slow
the rest of us down...the majority.
Not certain this how commentator decided he/she held the majority viewpoint
or garnered the authority to speak for same, but he/she fully misunderstands
the feature being discussed. I am not contemplating the creation and
deletion of folders throughout the day. That would, indeed, be silly. I am
looking for the ability to create permanent and semi-permanent folders for
the storage of emails that are not to be deleted and the ability to move a
particular message from one folder to another (e.g., a folder entitled "K9
Improvement Suggestions" to store emails pertaining to this very subject).
I want to get messages out of the Inbox, but not just to Trash.. Currently,
if you inadvertently delete an email that you actually wanted to keep, you
cannot even move it back out of the Trash to some other folder, not even the
Inbox.
There is no danger of bloat. Further, you always have the option of not
using the feature once it is created. I would never be so presumptuous as
to even hazard a guess as to what all the other K9 users prefer or who
comprises the "majority". And, I certainly would never use this forum to
attempt to profess those unknown positions, of those unknown users, fully
without authority, on their behalf..
Not bloat. I like to keep thousands of email on my phone, searchable and
handy. But doing so slows K9 horribly and without the requested feature,
leads to an unmanaged inbox. I agree with Comment 17.
Dear users, this is no discussion forum. If you feel the need to continue
this argument please use the mailing list
(https://groups.google.com/group/k-9-mail). IMHO, there is no additional
technical information that could be added to this issue. So please refrain
from posting unless you want to provide a patch.
Started new issue b4 I saw this..
PLEASE impliment this feature.. Need a place to save emails locally
in a saved folder.. the add a folder and move feaure is a must for me and
many users..Deal breaker for me with this otherwise perfect program
I also would like to see this feature added. Anyone who disagrees should
simply ignore the feature and this thread IMO.
Yes, it would be nice to have the ability to add a folder
occasionally.....as we are on the road a bit and not always at our main
e-mail software, I have come to rely on my Tablet as a great way to keep on
top of things at our business (transitioning from BB) - so, yes, might have
an occasion to use it. I am not a geek (said with the utmost respect, BTW)
or would offer to help, just a user with a need! Thanks!
This issue has been starred by 23 people! Why is the priority set to Low?
I also think it would be a great advantage to be able to create user
folders as in Outlook. Some email I need to keep, and to leave them in the
inbox just causes clutter.
Adding folders is critical for how I use mobile email. Otherwise, K-9 truly
rocks. I've started a search for other Android email apps that have this
feature. Please stop my search and add this to K-9. Thanks.
Any timetable on adding file folders? Really love the program, but this
feature has really become a necessity, both personal and business-wise.
It is important to have users own folder in order to organize and easy to
find a specific mail among hundreds.
I do think this is a basic and essential capability of a good mail program.
Please someone help to make it!
+1 for the need to be able to create folders. Mobile e-mail clients are for
those of us who do not get to our desktops for long periods of time. When
we do get to the desktop it would be nice if the e-mail we had received in
the interim is organized.
IMAPStore does contain the code to create a folder.
So only the UI is needed.
Yes please make moving messages possible. With more tablets around these
days it must be a priority.
Keeping several months worth of email is needed for quick mobile access to
information. Providing the ability to organize that email greatly eases
access to the information.
It is short sighted to say there is no need for this on mobile. Those of us
who work for telecomm friendly companies know the importance of being able
to have full access on the go. This feature would be high priority on any
corporate environment and even more so for the telecomms. It is necessary.
It should not be neglected. I would push this app throughout my entire
company if it were not for the lack of this feature.
I installed K9 in hopes that this specific feature (saving messages in
user ceated folders) would be there. Without it I see little advantage and
am going back to Android mail.
Developers shouldn't tell users how to use the tool. Developers must make a
tool that works the way the users need it to. If people need the ability to
have more folders, DO IT. Don't tell them to use the app the way you do.
They have different use cases than you. If you don't want to help solve
their problems why are you doing this? Only for cash or glory? And BTW
people are posting on the bug tracking system because you are ignoring it
elsewhere, and people need... NEED this feature. I am here. For the same
reason. Address the issue, or make sure on your features list that it is
spelled out that you won't support new folders or you will get more of
this. People use and want this and you can't go telling them how to use
their phone. Or tablet. Regards. -
Several reasons for me to retain email in a separate folder on the phone
other than 'inbox' - as others have said, I absolutely need mobile access
to my old emails (and currently keep them in the 'trash' - a ridiculous
solution, because I don't need to keep all of my old email and would like
to be able to trash them - we need separate folders because the app runs
very poorly with a lot of email in the inbox and I don't retain email on my
service's server. I save, backup and organize my email at the client. I
would add that folders should be searchable... Thank you!
I just installed k 9 because the supplied email on my toshiba thrive will
not connect to my pop 3 email. k 9 connected with no problem but no folder
support may send me looking for other alternatives. Please consider adding
this feature
Yes it is true you can change settings to IMAP and achieve folder creation
indirectly but POP works better for some users. I found out about Maildroid
app on another forum and it indeed allows folders to be created while
configured as POP so i have uninstalled K-9. It was good while it lasted
but I had to move on.

I've started this for IMAP and Pop3 (though Pop3 needs some work for the
folders to be useful). Wong will add WebDav support afterwards.
Great news. Any guesstimate on when the POP3 folder feature will be
ready? Thanks.
you're welcome to checkout my branch
https://github.com/ashleywillis/k-9/commits/issue-162
it works just fine for IMAP folder creation as well as local folders for
POP3 accounts, but the code needs some refactoring and some additional
features (rename and delete, mainly). i don't know how long the refactoring
will take.
Oh my! It is great to see light in the tunnel after 11 months since I last
asked for the feature! This feature becomes more important and useful with
handhelds and pads become more powerful! Many thanks indeed!
actually i tried this software for the second and hopefully the last time
now - its a piece of crap when you ty to use it with pop. no sent emails.
no way to sort out spam. no way to sort out mailing-lists.
never again.
and some people are talking about "bloated"
i can connect to :110 and get about thee sam usability
