New issue 3972 by a...@butin.cz: Too many simultaneous connections
http://code.google.com/p/k9mail/issues/detail?id=3972

1. Just using K-9, IMAP account, fetching in 10 minutes interval, side by
side with Apple Mail on the laptop, also fetching via IMAP in one minute
interval.
2. Randomly Apple Mail client losts connection with a message "Too many
simultaneous connections".
3. It wasn't happend during more then 2 years when I used the native
Android's Mail Client side by side with Apple Mail.
4. It works when K-9 is killed/disabled.

It seems K-9 keeps some connections or just flood gmail during fetching
more then enough.

I'm using 4.002 - the latest K-9 available on the Market.

Perhaps you have push activated as well.
Set "Account settings -> Fetching mail -> Push folders" to None.

Please change this issue to high!

I also get too many connections using K9, either it is opening too much at
the same time or not closing those it opens.
This results in a server lock.
So I can not fetch mail via any other computer or even not with K9.

you need one connection per push enabled folder. so you can try to reduce
the push enabled folders.

Can we simply have a setting that specifies the maximum number of
connections? (I have that in desktop Thunderbird), so assume it's able to
be done in K9? - Thanks.

Just don't push so many folders - then k9 would not use so much connections

Account settings > Fetching mail > Advanced > Max folders to check with push

What makes things different with K-9 Mail is that you use it on a mobile
device. So you often lose connectivity. When this happens the existing
connections aren't closed (and because of the high timeout of IDLE
connections the server won't know that you're gone for quite a while). As
soon as connectivity returns K-9 Mail opens new connections, possibly
running into the server's connection limit.

Comment #9 on issue 3972 by ro...@rogerwheatley.com: Too many simultaneous
connections
http://code.google.com/p/k9mail/issues/detail?id=3972

I should note that K9 is configured to NOT push - Yet still have this issue.

Regarding the response about "...mobile device..." and the loss of
connectivity causing connections not to close because of high time out,
etc. The issue is I do not experience the issue with ANY other mobile imap
application, only with K9 do I experience this.

K9 is full of option goodness, and I do like the application (a lot).
Hence, the suggestion to include the ability to configure the maximum
number of imap connections. Or forgoing that, if anyone could please offer
a fix. :)

Thanks muchly! :)

thats an hard issue to fix. How many connections does your mailserver
allow? Can you provide an debug log where you run out of connections?

Do you even run out of connections when you are only connected to an Wifi
all the time?

This problem is the reason why I stopped using K9 mail and sold my Android.
Back to the iPhone. Next time provide better support K9 mail.

Comment #12 on issue 3972 by wheatley...@gmail.com: Too many simultaneous
connections
http://code.google.com/p/k9mail/issues/detail?id=3972

In my opinion, this has nothing to do with Android and having to go to some
other mobile device (there are lots of mail applications that are not K9).
Rather, this potentially has to do with the mailserver and K9 in some
cases, the mailserver in others, or just K9 yet in other environments. In
my case, I was able to resolve the issue by tweaking the configuration of
K9. It was not quite what I wanted, but for the time being it suffices. ;)

Nonetheless, it would be GREAT if K9 included a feature where we could
configure how many connections it is allowed to have open at any given
time. :)

Hmmm... well what exactly did you tweak? I have a business website with
hostgator limiting me to 25 processes running at one time. I have 6
different e-mail accounts all with various folders/subfolders. I can see
the processes that are running on the Cpanel end of hostgator and it
exceeds it everytime no matter what I've tried.

Help, please?

Reduce number of Push enabled folders. Every push folder needs one
connection.

I have the same issue, having a business website with hostgator, my website
keeps crashing with internal server error 500. According to hostgator this
is due to too many imap connections, as my website is limited to 25
processes at any given time. I've tried the different settings on K9 but
the imap hits only stopped when i killed the internet connection on my
phone.

Using Gmail, Apple Mail and K-9, I have the same issue. When I restrict the
number of folders to be pushed to 10, the error still occurs. Is there any
other workaround than turning of push service?

Comment #19 on issue 3972 by cvonap...@gmail.com: Too many simultaneous
connections
http://code.google.com/p/k9mail/issues/detail?id=3972

Same problem here.

Only my inbox is a "main" folder for that account, so that is the only
folder which is supposed to use a push connection.
In my Android account settings, Gmail synchronisation for that account is
switched off, so only K9 is supposed to connect.

In my Thunderbird client on my notebook, the number of connections is
limited to 1.
However, when I come into our office and open Thunderbird on my notebook,
it shows the "too many connections error", as if K9 has just used many
connections.
So I am not able to read my mail in Thunderbird for about 15 minutes.

Any ideas?

Despite setting "Folders to Push" as "None" on K9, issue still persists on
the Mac, which doesnt receive Gmail promptly. SImilarly,, K9 seems to be
having issues sending mail on both - Android phone as well as tablet.

Did not anticipate these issues.

Comment #21 on issue 3972 by bgs...@gmail.com: Too many simultaneous
connections
https://code.google.com/p/k9mail/issues/detail?id=3972

Same problem here. When researching why 'em client' had too many
simultaneous connections error connecting to gmail, people getting the
problem seemed to exclusively all be using K9 mail also!

So my solution for now is I'm going to ditch K9, which is pity as I like
it, but I can't put up with the frustration when using other clients on
other machines.

I wish K9 would implement a connection limit (configurable down to 1), and
re-use its connection for push/polling/whatever all the other folders.

-bryce.
