New issue 3174 by kburke1...@gmail.com: Cant Open Attachments.
http://code.google.com/p/k9mail/issues/detail?id=3174

Hope someone can fix. From searching on the internet it seems like a lot of
people have had this problem but I cannot find someone who has fixed it.

The problem I am having is I cannot open Word documents on my phone. I have
tried to use Quickoffice, Docs2go & Openoffice Viewer, none of them will
open the files. These all come from multiple senders and are saved in the
correct format.

I have tried to uninstall K9 and reinstall.

I have tried to forward them to my Gmail from K9.

I have tried to save them to my phone and open them from the SD Card.

I have tried changing the SSL settings

I have tried opening through Astro

I have tried using Crutch Light

None of that works. I get the Error "the file cannot be opened" or "The
file is damaged" depending on which program I use. These word files open
fine on the computer but will not work when emailed to my phone.

I am using a POP3 account in k9 mail and I am not using any exchange
servers.

The only way it works and how I know it is a problem with K9 is if I set up
the entire account through my stock Email App I am able to open the
attachments but it fails every time when trying through K9. I really like
K9 so hopefully this gets corrected.

Hopefully this will be corrected

Attached is the debug log.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Is this a bug or a support request? - Bug

What steps will reproduce the problem? - Unknown starts randomly but others
have had same problem

What do you expect to have happen? I expect to Open attachments

What do you see instead? All programs get error. Will only work if I use
the stock Email App to receive the mail and than open from there

What version of K-9 are you using? Droid (Latest Version)

Is your email account a POP account, Exchange Account or an IMAP account?
POP3

please provide a debug log. Maybe some attachments get corrupted while
downloading them on weak mobile connections.

Can you try sending yourself an word file while the phone is connected to
an stable WIFI network?

http://code.google.com/p/k9mail/issues/detail?id=3174

I have a similar problem with my Galaxy S2 on K-9. Have polaris viewer and
also installed ES-Explorer. K-9 will only let me save attachments and view
them.

When trying to open PDF, the message I get is "This document cannot be
opened". But if I try to save it to SD card and then open, it works.
When trying to open a .xls file, it says "Unable to find viewer for
application/msexcel". But then again, I can save it to my sd card and open
it with polaris.

@kburke - I have never had a problem opening the saved attachment from the
SD card, but note that you need to scroll down and press the download
entire message button before you attempt to save the attachments.

I cannot open ANY office document (doc, docx xls, xlsx, ppt, pptx) directly
from K-9. When I click on "open", it shows that the attachment is being
downloaded and then I get a message that Polaris Office was terminated
unexpectedly.
PDF attachments however can be opened from K-9 without problems.

I discovered viewing the attachments required downloading the complete
message. K9 only downloads the header apparently unless one specifically
selects to download the complete message. This worked on both the Bionic
phone and Thrive tablet.

Attached is an email message which I can't open in k9. The only way I could
think to get this was through Thunderbird in WinXP since I don't have
access to a unix email client at the moment. It looks like a complete
message source.

FYI, Issue IDs 1761, 3510, 3512, and 3762 appear to be the same issue (I
posted logs an info in 1761).

Comment #20 on issue 3174 by markusra...@gmail.com: Cant Open Attachments.
http://code.google.com/p/k9mail/issues/detail?id=3174

I am facing the same issue.

I cannot open any tpye of email attachments (*.doc; *.xls; *.ppt; *.pdf;
*.tif; etc)anymore. It worked for a couple of times but suddenly, it does
not work anymore.

I am using a "German" K9 (Version 3.802) with IMAP and POP3 accounts on a
Samsung Galaxy S2. How do I proceed?

- Click "oeffnen" (open?) at the end of the email body right beside the
respective email attachment.
- Message says that the attachment will be downloaded.
- When finished, normally message window appeared showing the applications
I can open the respective file with (e.g. "office" files -> Polaris Office
or ThinkFree Office Lite; pdf -> Polaris Office or Adobe Acrobat
Reader...). At the moment the message window states "Vorgang abschließen
mit - Keine Anwendung kann diese Aktion ausführen" (translation? Finish
transaction - No application/program can handle this activitiy).

- When I download the files and store them on my phone; I can open those
files with the respective programs which I mentioned above.

Any suggestions how to proceed?

- Update 2 -

I just found a work-around which is working at least right now:

I did the following on my Samsung Galaxy S2:

Menu -> Einstellungen -> Anwendungen -> Anwendungen verwalten -> K9 Mail ->
Stopp erzwingen -> ERFOLG: Anhänge lassen sich wieder öffnen

Potential English description:
Menue -> Setting -> Application -> Administer applications -> K9 Mail ->
Force Stop

Maybe, this might help...

http://code.google.com/p/k9mail/issues/detail?id=3174

I had the problem too. And the answer is as simple as this. .. as someone
has already mentioned, you only download the message heading by default
unless you unselect that option in the settings (under fetch mail). You
need to download the whole message of you want to get the attachment.

Messages also have an option button to download the whole message. If you
select that button the attachments will be available to view.

Not a bug, a feature.

http://code.google.com/p/k9mail/issues/detail?id=3174

@paul.mon
I'm happy that the downloading the entire message works for you. (In which
case, that "feature" should be better handled by k9; an uninformative error
message doesn't help.)

Unfortunately, for myself and others, downloading the message does NOT
allow us to view attachments.

A workaround that DID work for is to install adobe reader for PDF files.
But what can't k9 play nice with Polaris office, when the stock email
client has no issues?

Best,
Kevin

Sorry, but it didn't work for me.
On galaxy SII, android 4.0.3: I dowloaded k9-4.118-release.apk ==>
no change: I still can't open attached files (.pdf, .doc,...) from
k9mail "open". If I do "download", the file is downloaded on my sdcard,
but the open still fails when k9mail tries to open it.
After that, if I access the downloaded file via the file explorer, it
is opened correctly.

here are the requested headers.
I remind you that:

1/ inside k9mail, "open" fails (idem for other file types)
2/ inside k9mail, after "save", adobe reader is call to read the file,
and says that it can't open the document
3/ adobe reader can open the saved document, when called directly
from the Android file explorer

http://code.google.com/p/k9mail/issues/detail?id=3174

OK I have it installed both on my Android (LG Optimus L9/ K9 ver 4.200) and
on my coworker's BB (BB Q10/ K9 ver 4.317). The BB has Adobe reader
installed. K9 won't do anything when selecting Open attachement.
I selected to donwload mails up to 256kb earlier and then changed it to
unlimited, cleaned the folder and downloaded all mails again (special
testing folder with just 11 mails, all with different kinds of
attachments). No change.
The attachments are small for testing this (xls, doc, pdf, jpg less than 50
kb). I tried with bigger files, donwloaded manually the entire mail and it
still doesn't work.
I restarted K9 countless times. Turned off the phone and restarted. Took
off the battery for a full restart. No change.
The files in the BB get saved to, suposedly: SDcard\NameOfTheAttachment.
That's fake it goes to: InternalMem\Misc\Android\NameOfTheAttachment.
Opening it with the file explorer works perfectly.

This doesn't seem an isolated problem of K9, or an incompatibility with
Polaris Office but a bug randomly activated or always present since first
install. I saw posts asking for this failure dating back to 2009. It's
june/2013 and it seems that it still happens to many people. The bug is not
completely solved...
