New issue 2331 by a.sch...@aarboard.ch: User autoconfig for account creation
http://code.google.com/p/k9mail/issues/detail?id=2331

In Mozilla Thunderbird 3.0 and up, account setup is very easy if the server
is configured with the config informations.

You have to enter your real name, email address and password.
All the other information are then auto detected according to this
description:

https://developer.mozilla.org/en/Thunderbird/Autoconfiguration

Having the ability to use the same auto config in K9 Mail would be great.
The most important systems would be the "ISP Database" for covering all big
ISP, and the "Configuration server at ISP" for all smaller companies which
care about end users.

This is one of our summer of code projects:

https://github.com/k9mail/k-9/wiki/An-user-friendly-account-set-up-wizard-with-automatic-settings-detection-mechanisms

We'll be using the Mozilla ispdb as suggested.

Did the summer of code actually accomplish anything relating to this? That
github link just takes me to the K-9 github homepage.
-
I don't see why K-9 can't just check for a TXT record in the specified
domain for an encoding of the autoconfig information; services like
Bonjour use TXT records to discover printer configuration, etc... Sadly
there is no standard for this but if K-9 just specifies a structure then
sites that want to support K-9 can just publish such a record.

Currently there exist two "standards" for mail client autoconfiguration.

- The mozilla way as mentioned above
- The MS way for outlook

On serverside there is a solution to provide the required informations with
this package

http://automx.org/

A TXT record is probably not flexible enough, since many time the email
address and the login account name do not match...

The summer did result in something. The branch can be found here:
https://github.com/dzan/k-9/tree/experimental/settings-autocomplete-finalfixes

Most of the functionality is their and we'r currently working on refining
the user interface.

We are using the Mozilla system for this.

Added issue 6137. Its an rfc so its not dependant to mozilla or microsoft
changes in their respective ways. Also ispdb cannot be used with "own"
domains. I mean if i setup my own mail server surely it wont be available
on ispdb.

Also i think standards should be the way to go.

Hi any update on this ? I work for a little ISP and it looks like android
is the only platform without autodiscovery / autoconfigure / deployment
function.
Is there a bounty for this ?

Thanks and regards,
Mike

Is anyone working and/or planning to work on this? I would really

I've been recommending k9 to all clients and colleagues, and having
autoconfig will simply things for all of them as their desktop clients are
already picking up all the config for them, and some cannot be bothered
with the technical details needed to set up their mail.

Is there any plan to take this live soon?
