I installed a firewall (droidwall) on my ZTE Blade in order to limit
the outgoing traffic to a minimum (de facto, I only authorized k9
mail) and also set the size of downloaded messages to 1 KB but I
noticed that after downloading just 7 emails this morning, the data
counter showed 51 KB of data consumption!
Any idea about this? Is there always an hidden amount of data or some sort of?
Thanks for any info.

51kb of data does not seem that much to me, if you check the header as well as the actual text contained within the e-mail I think you'll see that it's just possible to consume 51kb quite easily in 7 messages!! If you had said 51mb I too would be concerned about data usage.

Thanks, I'm trying to keep the amount of exchanged data to a minimum
since next week I'll be traveling to France and data roaming can be
very expensive, so I'm just fine tuning. I could delete all apps on my
android but not k9, my favorite app ever!

What I did when travelling in France & Spain was to turn off my data connection whilst roaming until I got to a free Wi-fi hotspot, which most towns and some villages had in abundance unless I really needed to receive or check for new e-mails.

Sent from my Android tablet, with K-9 Mail. Please excuse my brevity.

Also remember, each packet is at least 64 bytes or so, even the ones
that don't carry any data. Each transaction will cause several packets
to be sent back and forth before it actually moves any mail.

Don't forget to disable all automatic checking for mail, and set "push
folders" to None. Wait for a hotspot and check manually.

Good luck!

I am seeing an increase in battery consumption since I installed 4.390.

Is this something others are seeing as well?

Thanks.

Well, thanks both. I'm not sure I'm going to touch the folders' settings but my question was not only due to the upcoming trip to France, but even to the situation in Italy, where I live. In fact, my carrier, H3G, is a 3g only carrier and has serious difficulties covering all areas. So customers are allowed to the so called national roaming on another network but, in this case, data bundles don't work and I have to pay. Since when I'm going during summer time there is no open wifi and I have to go on national roaming, I wanted to experiment a tight combination of firewall (great invention, isn't it?) and data limits on k9. I believe 51 kb exchanged are ok after all, cause the national roaming data tariff is 60 euro cents per megabyte, so let's assume it's tolerable even if for a few days.
In Paris it would be different but I'd like to use gtalk or sms sent via a voip client instead of using normal sms which are priced 30 euro cents each!
We'll see.
