Just started using K9 and liking it.
I have looked for an answer to this but can't find one.
When I save an attachment (eg PDF file) K9 automatically opens the
attachment. Is there a way to stop this and just save the file.
Thanx,
John

Thanx for reply.
"open" doesn't work because the PDF files I get from my work are
application/octlet-stream but that is not a problem for me.
When I hit "save" the file is saved where I want it to but it is also
opened straight away by ezPDF. This is what I am trying to stop it
doing. Maybe its a setting in ezPDF! Any ideas?

1. k9 should guess the mime type if the server sends
application/octet-stream
=> open should work as expected

please fill a bug for this one in our issue tracker.

2. if you simple click the save button are you prompted to choose a
directory?

1. the server sends the MIME type as application/octlet-stream (not
octet). I can set the MIME type on my laptop (using Puppy Linux) but
haven't been able to do it with Android. This is not really a problem
as once the file is downloaded it is seen as a PDF file.

2. when I click on the save button the file is saved to the
directory /mnt/sdcard without asking. The file is then automatically
opened in ezPDF. Then when I close the PDF file I am returned to K9
Mail.

Maybe the server is sending some bogus information. I'm unaware of
anything known as an "octlet-steam" and a Google search failed to
produce results other than "Showing results for octet-stream"

have you tested this with other email clients on k9? do you have this
problem with other attachments from work? pdfs from elsewhere?

i'm guessing this has to do with ezPDF or some other app which watches
for new files on the sdcard. sounds like a battery killer.

To un-satirize Seth, I suspect you got octet-stream, not octlet. Computers are so literal...

octet-stream is used by lazy developers who can't be bothered to write intelligent code; it means "here's a pile of bytes, you figure it out".

It's part of the war among us computer types who can't agree whether files should have internal descriptive info (Unix magic numbers), required suffixes (ms-dos) or plaintext metadata wrapping everything (mime).

I think of it as job security and opportunities to complain about Microsoft.

What software creates those messages containing
"application/octlet-stream"? If it's anything that is also used by
someone other than your company we can rewrite it to
application/octet-stream and work our magic from there (find a usable
MIME type by looking at the file extension).

Thanx to all for helping.

Firstly, these application/octlet files are from my work, a large
company, so they are probably an inhouse creation. (They are living in
the dark ages when it comes to software.) I am not so worried about
this are they are seen as PDF once
downloaded. I don't know what software they use to create these and
they probably wont tell me.

Secondly, I ran a few test emails. Sent myself a normal PDF, a JPG, a
text and a json file
The PDF file opened in ezPDF when I tapped the 'open' button but when
I hit 'save' it still opened the file after saving.
The jpg file worked with 'open' (in gallery) but again when I hit
'save' it opened the image after saving.
(The other 2 files weren't recognised but saved OK and could be opened
later.)

So it would seem its a K9 mail issue as the same behavior happened
with the jpg file as with the pdf files.

assuming it doesn't happen with other email apps on android. can you
send some test messages to me?

Has this issue been solved? Or is there acceptable a workaround? I got the same problem, and it seems nothing has changed for a couple of years.
The only thing keeping K-9 from opening an attachment after saving it, is the fact that I sometimes have more than one app installed for specific file types. So Android asks me what app to use. This way I still have a chance cancel the process of opening a maybe compromised file, e.g. before scanning a zip file for malware etc. (Those scanners are usually not listed by Android as compatible apps.) But what if I remove some of those apps Android lists, and I have maybe only one compatible app left. Then Android will just open the file without asking. Bad!

Cheers,
Marco
