Check boxes don't display on android 2.3.2

I recently downgraded to Gingerbread 2.3.2 from Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.4 because of connectivity issues - When I re-installed K-9 Mail the check boxes for deleting messages no longer appeared on the screen --- they are off to the left and I can barely see the edge of the box. If I drag the box over I can check it, but on 4.0.4 it was on screen.

 

I looked in the settings and can't find any that pertain to displaying the entire check box... is this the way it is now, of can I get my checkboxes back?

Not displaying the checkboxes is the default behavior. Swiping from left
to right selects a message. There is no need to start the swipe at the
colored bar at the left.

To always display the checkboxes check '(Global) Settings > Display >
Multi-select checkboxes'.
