Hi all,
I have recently re-installed K-9 mail after resetting my phone (Oreo 8.1), I had a ~8 months old K-9 mail version before and now I have the 5.703.
With the old version the app by default opened in the accounts list view, and I could know at a glance which accounts had new mail.
Now the app by default opens the inbox of the first account and I cannot find at all a way to open the accounts list view.
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks!
Enrico

bump, nobody has this issue?

I understand others have the same issue.

I also understand that the 5.703 beta version removes the accounts list view. I don't know why they want to do that since it's useful. Pointless change for the sake of change?

From the conversation I and others have had with one of the developers, they have no plans to bring the global account view back. Which is a shame because it is essential for those of us that have multiple accounts. In my view, K-9 was special because of this feature but now it's just as ordinary as Gmail.

This is unfortunate.  I have 5 email accounts.  It is important to have an accounts list to manage the various accounts.  Without an accounts list, K9 become a challenge to use.  I'll have to find another email client.  Such a shame.  I've used K9 for near a decade.

And here's another vote for keeping the accounts list.

In the case the accounts list vanishes I will leave K-9 after having
used it for 12 years now!

Same here, I‘ve been using K9 also for 10+ years now.

Yesterday I installed 5.7xx and really liked the optical update. But the removal of the accounts list is a complete showstopper for me (and family members). For my daily use this overview was one of the key features.

So for now I downgraded back to 5.6, but unless the account list returns I regret that I will have to turn to another solution in the long run...

Same here, shortly after I installed 5.7 I realized the account overview
is gone. Basically it feels like I went back to the Gmail app. With over
15 accounts that overview is a must have and it was the reason that I
left Gmail behind in favor for K9.

So I switched quickly back to 5.6.

Looking at the code it appears 5.7 is a major update of K9. It appears
that it would be hard for the dev team to bring back the account
overview since the new layout style is based on the account pullout menu.

I consider to bring it back my self but I'm new to Android development.
So the learning curve is quite steep for me.

IMO the best improvement in 5.7 is the cleaned up settings menu. That is
rather cumbersome in 5.6.

Strategically the new UI direction seems to target broader user base,
providing a more familiar user interface to standard email users with
just a few accounts.

But this comes at the cost of leaving power users behind, which IMO is
currently a strong user base for K9.

Currently (5.6) K9 distinguishes itself from other clients through its
unique functionality and UI. When that is gone what will keep users with K9?

K9 != gmail Yay :-)

K9 == gmail Buuh ;-(

Well those are my thoughts on this

Seems the devs plan to bring back unread numbers in the account dropdown:

https://github.com/k9mail/k-9/issues/4515

Although a small step in the right direction, it is really no replacement for the account overview page.

I personally don't get why the account overview page would not fit in the new UI concept:
They could just add an optional entry to the drawer on the left that navigates to the overview and make the back key also show it. This would also be the entry that is first shown when k9 starts. The overview page would then be an alias for the drawer UI.
Not sure whether there are any difficulties considering the programming side, but UI wise this integration would work and give the best of both worlds.

It really seems that the devs don't care about their long term power users. It's their right, but it will lead to a client that is inferior to many existing mail clients (e.g. FairEmail).
K-9 currently cannot compete feature wise, but was more organized and resource efficient when using many accounts. That's the reason why I chose it.
Remove that overview page and it's just a gmail clone with fewer features than the competition. Thats the same road Opera went: sacrifice your core users for the sake of wider audience. But the wider audience does not care about the product and does not invest into it. Hope the devs reconsider this.

I never heard of FairEmail. I'm going to look it up.

I've not yet tried the beta version, but I do like the accounts page. I want to be ready with a K9 alternative in case I don't like it. Anybody have other ideas about email clients to try?

Look in Fdroid, Internet category. I see a number of other email clients. I picked K-9 because it let me move emails between folders. I seem to remember that at least some of the others (including in Google Play Store) don't.

Is there a way to save the existing final version's *.apk so that you can go back if you don't like the upcoming final?

Staying on 5.6 forever was not an option for me, but since I did not want to sacrifice the accounts page I went on the lookout for an alternative mail program, most preferably open source.

After a few days of testing I have now fully switched over to FairEmail. Suits my needs perfectly, but of course that is a matter of personal preference.
Apart from many other features it has an accounts page (as an option) including the number of unread mails. And finally Push (IMAP idle) is working quite reliably :-) I never managed to get this working properly with K-9 on any phone I had...

And moving mails between folders of different accounts is not a problem, I just tested it a few minutes ago :-)

Yes. Look for an app in The Play Store named Apk Extract. Make sure to backup your account setting too.

For me the Accounts List with numbers of unread messages was indispensable. It enabled me to see the current situation at a glance.

However, it happened to be necessary for me to switch to the recent version, hence most up-to-date with underying technologies. So I moved to the beta version. But probably for short, due to this discomfort, technically minor but ergonomically unbearable.

I have exactly the same situation and issue. I have 7 email accounts and
having an overview of all accounts with the number of unread in each
...and the ability to sync all of them at the same time, is
*indispensable* for me too.

I have temporarily (hopefully) switched to a different app and will see
what shakes out when the new version of k-9 mail is complete. If the
accounts overview is indeed gone in the final release, I'll
unfortunately have to stick with my alt.
