is anybody else experiencing this?

I have this issue with both k9mail 5.007 and 5.107

Is there any info I can provide to help debug this?

I haven't seen this with my nexus-5/android-6 device.

What kind of device?

Is this happening with all messages, or only some? On text-part only
messages (e.g., the ones that I send to this list), or only messages
with an html part? Device orientation specific?

With my desktop client, badly formed html messages won't display.
K-9's html rendering is rather better, but if it's just "now and
then" it could be that someone is sending you very badly formed html
messages.

Note, if it's a large message that exceeds K-9s "fetch size"
setting, you'll probably need to force the download of the whole
message before it will render.

Assuming it hasn't always been this way, did it start after a recent
update to android-6 or one of the system-level helper applications?

Did you happen to alter the default permissions/access that some app
has (a capability new with android-6) or disable/remove a
system-type/pre-installed app?

right, it wasn't always so.

webview updates regularly, could it be related to that?

yeah, but as I said above, it happens with all.

Another information: the new mail notifications include the (beginning
of the) message text, and so does the folder view.

When I forward a message (and hit the edit symbol), I also see the
message.

Do you have a sense of when it broke?

My nexus-5/android-6's webview is 47.0.2526.100, from jan-4, and
hasn't caused any issues, but your hardware is a bit different. My
sense is that webview does what the name implies - "displays web
content" - so wouldn't seem to be directly relevant, at least not
for text-only messages. That said, you could try the "uninstall
updates" option for it (under the three vertical dots in the upper
right in "app info"). The "uninstall" in the app store app probably
does the same thing. If that doesn't help, just reinstall the
updates.

Have you tried going back to earlier releases of K-9? K-9 5.007 is
from late november. K-9 5.006 was released in early june, about the
same time as 5.107 (alpha).
