On my android phone, as unread emails come in they disappear from my inbox after I read them. I don't delete them, I simply open and read and when I go back to my inbox They are gone. They are still on my server and show up when I check my email on my laptop. But I want my emails to stay in my k-9 email on my phone after I read them. Sometimes I read an important work email on my phone but don't immediately respond but also don't want to wait until I get home to respond either. I'm hoping it's some sort of setting but I can't figure out which it is.

What mail provider are you using, and are you connecting via POP3 or IMAP?

Then I perhaps have an idea what might be going on:

  • IMAP means you view your e-mails on the server - which is great if you have more than one device or more than one program as all your devices and program will share the same Mails.
  • pop3 means that by default all mails you download for viewing are by default automatically deleted from the server. This was handy in the days server storage was expensive and no-one had more than one computer. You can tell pop3 not to automatically delete read mail from the server. But you might have to do so both on thunderbird and K9: I don't know if any of these programs defaults to deleting mails after download.

Kind regards,

      Gunter.

If you leave the Inbox and go to the account list and then back into the Inbox, are they there? I have seen the behavior of read emails "disappearing" but if I leave the Inbox and come back, they're there.

This issue is true at my K-9 too.

The explanation with POP3 and default setting "delete mail after
download" doesn't apply, because he wrote, they are still on the server!

Correct, I do not believe this a pop3 issue. The emails are not being deleted from the server. I am simply reading the email on my phone. After opening it I go back to my inbox and the email is gone from my phone. But is is still on the server and when I open the email on my laptop it shows up as an unread email. When I delete it on my laptop, then it's actually deleted.

No, they're not there even if I leave and come back. BUT, if I reply to the email from my laptop then it does show up in my phone inbox next time I check for new emails. OR, if I immediately reply to the email from my phone as soon as I open it, then it remains in the inbox. But if I simply read it and don't respond, it is no longer visable from my phones K-9 email.

I would suggest setting up your account in K-9 mail with IMAP and seeing if the same issue still occurs. POP3 is not really meant for use with multiple clients, so weird issues like the one you're seeing are not surprising.
