Hello,

my name is João Ascenso,i'm a student of computer science in
University of Évora, Portugal and i'm really interested in the
project. I enjoy to work with Android and database conceptualization
and building. I'm also interested in learning and developing more
experience in this field. I'm a server manager at the computer science
student associative of my university and i'm fairly used to deal with
mails, secure imap and pop3s protocols, but never worked in mime
structure and sorts.

I worked with Java for most of my degree and participated in Sapo
Summerbits, a Portuguese Open Source program modeled from GSOC,
although much smaller, which consisted in developing a Android app to
access, display and modify Moddle content though a SOAP
implementation. Ever since that i have been a avid android fan and
user. I also did some small works for Android, for some classes using
geolocalization, simple event calendars and simple task managers. As
for databases i'm familiar on desktop with mysql and postrgres
databases and on android with sqlite and the object oriented database
"perst".

My university also exclusively works with open source technology.
I've also I have included a link to the project i worked on at the
end of this post.

I'm really interested in the project, but i was wondering about what
was on the project ideia about the mentor being a possible student. Is
it open for proposals?

Sorry for being so close to the deadline, but i was caught in school
work up until now.

Best Regards,
João Ascenso

Hello,

I am the K-9 Mail developer who proposed the "Overhaul database"
project. I was willing to mentor this project in case I didn't apply as
a student to GSOC. But since I'm free during the summer I will apply for
this project. While Google seems to be fine with two students working on
the same project I think it's not desirable for us (K-9) to have two
students working on the same task. And while I obviously can't be
involved in the student selection process I believe your chances are
slim if you apply for this project. I have a bit of a head start when it
comes to familiarity with the code base. Having worked most of the
related bug reports I also have a good understanding of what exactly is
needed.
So my advice would be to consider applying for another project idea. But
you may want to ask our GSOC admins/mentors for an official statement on
that matter.

Cheers,
cketti
