Hi, What do you recommend for fast drying and child safe cardboard glue?
Thanks! Francesca

If I can't use low temp hot glue I grab tacky glue. Teach kids to use very little glue and squeeze the joint for "two happy birthdays". Love to hear other suggestions!

Second for Tacky Glue. If you're in the states, enjoy that brone bottle goodness.

Justin's important idea is "make an adhesives chart" that matches "the song oy have to sing until it's dry" to durability and materials.

That sparked a wonder, do folks have a preferred anchor chart in their teaching spaces for choosing adhesives? Any photos you can share?

Always appreciate the shared expertise on this list.

With gratitude,

-Matt

We use low temp hot glue starting in grade 1.

We use a lot of hot glue but when we can't, we try to teach good gluing techniques:

-spread it out with a stick or with your finger, aiming for a thin film. Bigger surface area=stronger connection and thinner film=dries faster.
-use binder clips, clothespins or masking tape to hold it in place while it dries

If you do that, even plain Elmer's Glue dries strong in about 30 seconds. They key is getting it thin enough that the cardboard can suck the moisture out quickly.

+1 for Tacky Glue or a PVA based wood glue like Titebond though, for a thicker consistency that is easier to move around.

Regular or Original wood glue (NOT gorilla wood glue or Premium, etc) is kid safe, works well on cardboard, and is pretty tacky too.

We will use regular Elmer's or wood glue. The game changer that we have discovered is to use these https://www.rockler.com/rockler-3-piece-silicone-glue-application-kit. They make it easy for the kids to paint the glue thin enough that it will dry quickly and avoid wrinkling the card/paper. They also make for easy cleanup -- just leave them out to dry completely and peel off the glue.

I agree with all the suggestions above (and glad to see Tacky Glue on there!). I also want to give a shout out to an old favorite, Grandmother Stover's. It's an extremely low-moisture glue that is like super-tacky tacky glue. It is great for paper, since it doesn't wrinkle it at all but I use it in various situations. It takes the place of old-school "paste" in my mind, but it's better.
Also, I don't know about you, but I used to think CA glues like super glue, crazy glue, etc. were only for super high-tolerance, non gap-filling applications but it's great on all sorts of materials. Get some of the gel kind for times when the normal, watery consistency doesn't seem right (or use the baking soda trick). If you use any CA glues, invest in a can of the accelerator spray too! Game changer!

Oh, and don't forget Mr. McGroovy's cardboard rivets! They're reusable and can attach pretty thick pieces together securely. They also work as pivots in certain situations. Generally, I like them better than the Makedo cardboard screws, but the rivets require access to both sides of the pieces being connected.

Hi Everyone!
Thanks for your input. I love all the ideas and am hearing lots and lots of singing while sticking things together now. :) I wanted to share that I actually found this material in my new art studio.. no idea what it is called but it works wonders! Kids cut the amount they need, "paint" water on the shiny side and stick their cardboard together, and it stays! and it's sturdy! and it's not messy! and it dries fast! :)
Happy Friday, Best, Francesca

That goes by a few names: gummed tape, paper tape, water activated tape, gummed kraft tape. They make dispensers for it with a sponge to activate it on the way out! It's also recyclable.
It's great stuff.

Water activated gum tape! They use it in warehouses to seal boxes. What a great idea you've got there!
