A Back-to-School Bonanza + Extravaganza!

Join Bay Area educators for a back-to-school maker blitz at Girls Garage in Berkeley! Participants can choose to attend for one or two days, and will leave with a collection of hands-on activities designed for the first week of school. All activities are low-cost and applicable to students across all ages and subjects. We will provide all materials and coffee, as well as supply lists and how-to guides to take home; lunch is on your own. (Participants will also have the opportunity to laser etch a personalized sign for their classroom on each day!)

Where: Girls Garage, 1380 Tenth Street, Berkeley, CA 94710

When: August 17 and 18th, 10-4pm
Cost: $75 per person, per day

Thursday, August 17 / Bonanza!

10-12pm: Screen Printing Basics – Learn how to create stencils to print on fabric. We’ll supply a tote, and you can bring your own t-shirt. Perfect for school apparel, sports teams, or one-off designs or quotes of your choice.

12pm-1pm: Working Lunch – Continue screen printing, and/or enjoy lunch nearby: Whole Foods, Farm Burger, Chipotle, and Tokyo Fish are all within 2 blocks. Participants can also explore our inspiring library full of books about design and education over lunch.

1-2:15pm: Blackout Poetry – Inspired by artists like Austin Kleon and Tom Phillips, learn how to transform any text into poetry. You’ll leave with a framed print and many ideas about how to use constraints to prompt creative thinking in the classroom.

2:15-3:45pm: Bookbinding - Learn 2 bookbinding techniques that students can use to create their own journals, picture books, sketchbooks and zines.

3:45-4pm: Reflect on classroom practice and distribute supply lists.


Friday, August 18 / Extravaganza!

10-12pm: Block Printing Basics – Learn how to carve rubber blocks to create personalized stamps for printing on paper. We’ll experiment with patterns, and you’ll leave with a framed print of a personalized tessellation.

12pm-1pm: Working Lunch – Continue printing, and/or enjoy lunch nearby: Whole Foods, Farm Burger, Chipotle, and Tokyo Fish are all within 2 blocks. Participants can also explore our inspiring library full of books about design and education over lunch.

1-2:15pm: Paper Architecture – Inspired by Richard Serra’s Verb List and based on pop-up enginering, you’ll practice making 3D sculptures that are perfect for math, engineering, storytelling and more.

2:15-3:45pm: Paper Circuits – Using easy-to-acquire materials like copper tape, coin cell batteries and LEDs, learn how to use simple circuitry to teach physics, illuminate books and experiment with conductivity.

3:45-4pm: Reflect on classroom practice and distribute supply lists.

Bonanza Extravaganza = more like "carnival and hot dogs" than bulletin boards and seating charts, but yeah - point taken :)
