My district is new to the makerspace scene, and we are looking for places to visit.  Do we have a list of locations where folks are willing to share their experiences?  Thank you in advance- Kim

Kim - We are finishing up for the summer but I love visitors.  If there is a spreadsheet that already exists, if not I can start one for the group.   I joined this group about a month ago, and it as been an awesome resource.

Thank you everyone.

Kim,
Technocopia is a very innovative maker space in Worcester MA, they are an independent non-profit but are running very successful programs in the community. It may be worth getting in touch with them. http://technocopia.org

Hi Kim,

Here is a list of local Makerspaces that serve a K-12 population. I have other contacts at some of our partner schools, though since the school year is wrapping up, they're maybe less of a sure thing. I can share those contacts directly via email.

Program TitleFab Lab Boston and South End Technology Center
Brief Program Description
who do you serve? Hundreds of youth ranging from elementary to high school and college from all over the city as well as many adults from the area.
What do you do? Many, many things… we build, create, teach, learn, test, experiment, fail (only sometimes), try again, succeed. We have a 4x8 foot Shopbot (CNC Router), 2 laser cutters, several 3D printers, a milling machine, vinyl cutter (great for making T-Shirts with the Heat Press or screen printing or even circuits) and many computers setup to make (almost) anything your mind can imagine (digital or physical).
How do you do it? A main program of ours is called Learn2Teach, Teach2Learn where college and a handful of older folks teach High Schoolers how to teach Middle Schoolers all the tools and ways of the Fab Lab including the design process.
We also provide private lessons scheduled individually or in small groups and open times for the community (currently Thursdays 4-8pm) with Fab Stewards who are trained high school students ready to help anyone who wants to learn. Throughout the year, students and community members are able to intern and work on projects. Many projects are community oriented, but practically anything can be accomplished!

WATERTOWN:

Program TitleHATCH by the Watertown Free Public LIbrary
Brief Program Description: (who do you serve? What do you do? How do you do it?)
In 2012 WFPL staff decided to pursue opening a makerspace as a library initiative—there was already a strong presence of “maker programming” in the library, particularly for children and teens, and opening a makerspace was a natural extension of that. However, there was no physical space in the library to do this. As it happened, the Police Department adjacent to the library was vacant and that soon became the targeted future home of the WFPL makerspace. The idea was mentioned to the Town Council in the spring of 2012 and was received well. With that, the WFPL started planning a makerspace.

Throughout 2012 and into early 2013 library staff investigated community interest and started to host more maker programming. There was clear interest from the community, but still no space. The vacant Police building remained a hopeful option, but there was no definitive answer on how the Town planned to use it. Lucky for the WFPL the Arsenal Project was looking to develop community space on their property. They approached Library Administration and offered store front space to the makerspace project for free and from there HATCH was formed.
We are almost exclusively volunteer run and thrive because of their passion and drive.

Our very own Makerspace, located in Watertown, was inspired by kids in all K-12 grades and features 3D printers, CNC machines, robotics and plenty more tech pieces to create learning and problem solving that's a blast!

The Duct Tape Network (DTN) is a series of fun, hands-on maker clubs that encourage young children (ages 7-10) to use cardboard, tape, wood, fabric, LED lights, motors, and more to bring their stories and inventions to life. We are designing an educational framework and toolkit to engage kids in the creation of things that they care about before they lose their curiosity or get pulled in by more consumer-oriented technology. Work on DTN started in 2014 as part of a collaboration with the MIT Media Lab and Autodesk. We are now expanding to communities all around the world.
