Making a vertical wind tube

Dear K-12 Makers,

Have you built a vertical wind tube, ala the Exploratorium's excellent Wind Tubes guide? We have a wind tube we built around five years ago off of a basic HDX 20" fan that works great, but we're building a new one and finding that new fans just aren't cutting it. We've tried half a dozen models, including the suggested model in the Wind Tubes guide, and are getting minimal lift. Any suggestions on a specific model number to purchase?
