Hey brains,
We found that the Dunkin' Donuts large straws are the perfect size for having a 1/4" wood dowel move in freely, but not too freely. Other ones we've tried from amazon are either a teeny bit too snug (listed as 1/4" but that's a rough size) or way too loose (smoothie straws).

While "sourcing" Dunks straws here in Massachusetts is easy, I'd like to have a link to share with others... does anyone have a link for a go-to straw that fits a 1/4" dowel jussst right?

Thanks!

We roll our own paper straws for that purpose.  Roll a strip of paper around the dowel, or a round pencil is a bit wider.  You can purchase the instruction packet https://www.dazzlingdiscoveries.com/product-page/paper-straws-tubes-brackets-diy-building-sticks-with-connectors ($6) for very easy to follow instructions or try it on your own.  I recommend copy paper or magazine page - these are incredibly sturdy and make a great construction item beyond using it for axles.
