Good afternoon everyone!

As a FabLearn fellow who is navigating the challenges of bringing maker education to a public school I was asked where and how to find PBL and/or "MakerEd" colleagues in the public k-12 space. In support of starting a network, I'd like to encourage people to add their school info hereThe link goes to a spreadsheet with editing permissions for anyone with the link, so it is immediately visible. Having a space is not a prerequisite to be on this list.

¡Mil gracias, and have a lovely Sunday!

Thanks for sharing, everyone! There has to be more than seven of us! This data is not going on a report or survey anywhere. It is just for the purpose of making connections between colleagues involved in "maker ed" in the public school space.

Perhaps a Google Doc or some sort of survey tool could be used to get a sense of where we are all working?

Hi David,

There are more of us doing similar work in the public space, but many are 'old school', identify as shop teachers and thus aren't on this list. I was on a Maker Ed panel with John Umekobo (on this list but at a private school) and Jean Kaneko (on this list, from The Exploratory, working with a few LA area public schools) at a recent county ed workshop. We were joined by three educators from LA area public schools who blended math in a traditional math classroom and the companion shop space. I'll reach out to them and pass along your contact info. I'd also recommend reaching out to the CITEA group. I know, I know, "shop" is not the same as "making" but there are a lot of crossover points and making in the public space has  a lot to learn from what used to be called Vocational Ed. The CITEA annual convention is in a few weeks in the Bay area. It's a small convention and they tell a lot of rueful jokes about their breed dying out, but they're super friendly and super supportive of the maker movement. Last year it was down here in SoCal, I went and learned a LOT.

Thanks for organizing the public sector folks! It's a more complicated animal and we need more and different supports.

Donna

P.S. to Fred - yes to a google doc of basic project and staffing stats!

David, were you looking for schools that do Project Based learning AND the maker approach?

Or if it was simply a public school that had some aspect of making at some point in the day? but not interdisciplinary work or curriculum or projects.

thanks

Well, I had replied privately to Fred that I preferred the post to stay visible and same for the data. If people just answer the survey then the post will be quickly forgotten. I suppose we could request Angi to "pin" the post too. If there is a survey, then I'd like the responses to be visible too. I don't know, are people worried about privacy?

We have a similar google form survey in SoCal for local maker ed folks and most felt fine adding to it, but certainly, if people on the K12 list don't want to share info, they don't need to fill out the survey and can simply reply to the email thread.

The survey results for the form I posted should be visible to anyone who submits their info.

I for one would love it if we could build a non-branded databases of the various types of spaces. I find few spaces with our set of variables and am always seeking partners solving similar 9-12 issues.

How I wish my school was PBL, but as a public school with testing at the forefront and our teacher evaluations based on how well our students do on the state tests, teachers and admins are too afraid to move away from the 45 minute, separate curriculum for each subject, and not mixing it up.

Making and PBL is a natural fit, but PBL done incorrectly, or in bits and pieces isn't true PBL.

I'll be in the Bay Area for MakerFaire, would you be open for a possible visit if I can get up there before the madness? I know you're k-5, but I'd still like to see how another public school has succeeded.

I think this points out an issue with the Google form - people who need to find potential colleagues are most often people who don't have a space yet - but then how do you see the people who have filled out the form?

Also, the k12makers site has a google spreadsheet that anyone can access and view - perhaps rather than creating a new list, there is a way to add a column to that list?

Lighthouse Community Charter School, chartered by Oakland Unified, operating in Oakland, CA, K-12

The k12makers.org site says:
Below are school makerspaces where people are willing to entertain visitors and/or field questions about how to create your own space.

So I am not sure that this is the right space for keeping track of this data...

And in the bay area, we can also reach out to the East Bay Maker Educators and the Bay Area Maker Educators. We also have had quite a few public school teachers/admin attend our PD sessions, but they might not  be on this list.

Thanks Aaron!

Yes the list on K-12 makers also doesn't discern between public and private schools. And it's not just about having a space, there are plenty of schools running "MakerEd" activity without a dedicated space.

I encourage people to keep adding info here. The link goes to a spreadsheet with editing permissions for anyone with the link, so it is immediately visible. Now that the post is pinned, newcomers will be able to easily see it. I migrated the data from the previous posts. Feel free to add your e-mail address.

Aaron, could you please forward the link to the EBME and BAME circles?

Greetings, all! I work in K-12 education and love making!

This year, I am chairing the Maker Ed strand of the K12 Online Conference, and I'd like to invite all of you to consider submitting a proposal. Whether you are new to maker ed or an expert, you have something to contribute. (We also have other strands for Stories of Connection, Overcoming Obstacles, and Beyond the Core: Arts and More.)

If you aren't familiar with the K12 Online Conference, it is a virtual conference for teachers that is held in October (although the sessions from it are available all year).  It is a completely free and all-volunteer run, noncommercial professional learning event.

A "presentation" for our conference is a 20-minute, pre-produced video segment.  The format is up to you, and we encourage the inclusion of youth voices. All of our sessions are open licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license.

If you have any questions about this or would like to chat more about this, please feel free to contact me at ka...@k12opened.com. And please help spread the word about this event.

Thanks so much!

Regards,

Karen Fasimpaur

Good afternoon everyone!

Having a space is not a prerequisite to be on this list.

Hey all, back in June, I found this group and shared a link to my blog, below.

You've been a tremendous help, more than you'll ever know, so thank you.

I've got some pics of my room transforming from computer lab to full-on makerspace, here:

I'm writing a year-long series for Edutopia about the process, as well. The first two posts:

Finally, here's our 'official' program website, which looks utterly horrible, but uses the software teachers are required to use:

Again, thanks! Hope to meet some of you at FabLean 2015 later this month!

Kevin,

This is awesome! I am on a similar journey, although I have not documented mine as well as you have. I wish I could find the time to share out this way. I just spent the last 3 weeks converting an old classroom into a Makerspace. I posted pictures on Twitter @dorifriedman.

I love the “Life Ready" poster you made!

Anyway, just wanted to say thanks for sharing… Great work! Have an awesome year! Exciting times!!! :)

Hey Dori, right back!

I know what you mean, I've been running flat-out since about August 23rd myself - was gone most of the summer before that - the majority of our progress came in the last three weeks as well.

Will you be at FabLearn later this month? Would love to connect!

I wish I could be at Fablearn… but will not be attending this time.

I’ll be following along on Twitter :) Can’t wait to see your posts.

If you are ever in Santa Monica, come visit me at Crossroads!

Perhaps we can develop a collaborative project this year as well. I am anxious to mingle my students with other like-minded students.

I've been thinking on how to facilitate connections among public K-12 maker educators. Perhaps peeps could share their biggest issues with implementing their programs?

I am a media specialist in a 5th and 6th grade building. My biggest issue, hands down, is tech support. Our tech department has everything locked down, they are understaffed and under paid. They also don't have the knowledge base to support makerspace design software. At one point we had someone on staff who did, and it was a game changer. He's since moved on to working at a University.

Lisa here in Scarsdale NY. We have a 4000 sq. ft high school design lab. Biggest issue for us is buying tools, machinery and materials via public school vendors. I have had to get companies onto the NYState vendors list. It's time consuming and a huge pain. And if we have a big order, we have to get three other quotes for comparison. It takes hours! That said, if you need help sourcing stuff in the northeast, I'm happy to help! Also oen to anyone visiting and seeing what we are up to. Thanks for sharing, Julie. How on board is the administration? One reason I was successful was I had my own set of PCs which I maintained largely by myself with occasional help from our tech director and a contractor.

Also what software are you looking to use? Perhaps there are web based alternatives we can share about?

That's interesting, Lisa. Is that a district-wide policy? I used to be able to find almost any vendor and work with POs or a credit card. I do recall CDW took a long time to work with. I think it was also challenging for a community charter school to have the same credit ratings as a district.

4K square feet, wow!? Do you mind sharing some photos or plans of your space?

The administration is pretty on board, in general. Actually, that would be great - I am struggling with finding a good web-based design software for 3D designs, laser prints, etc. I've tried Sketchup, which we have downloaded, but sometimes have issues with exporting the file into something I can use for 3D prints, I was using Tinkercad, but for a while the site was going down and the kids were getting frustrated. Fusion 360 was recommended to me, but it seems like it might be too complex for 5th/6th graders. Is there anything else out there?

For 2D designs, have you tried gravit.io? Pretty powerful! Also, google drawings just added a ruler which makes it a decent place to start.

Tinkercad has also added a lot of new tools in the past year and has been fairly reliable.

Julie,

Give Tinkercad another try. I've found it to be very reliable recently. It's become the go-to 3-D app for K-5.

For 2-D, I second Gravit. It will run natively on Macs or in the cloud at gravit.io. It's free, the developers give it great support and there is a vibrant and growing community around it.

Agree on both counts. Tinkercad has been smooth, continues to add new features, and is free.

Just getting into gravit.io myself recently, and am enjoying the platform. I come from Illustrator, so it's simple, but can do most of what my middle school students need, particularly for laser cutting, 3D carving, vinyl cutting.

I would definitely recommend TinkerCAD and even Fusion over Sketchup, which is just not well designed to generate error free geometry for 3D printing.

If stuck with SketchUp you could try a mesh repair app, but that brings another layer of complexity. There are a quite a few options but perhaps someone else can weigh in on those?

And your school's internet is otherwise pretty reliable?

Thanks Adam, Mark and John for helping out!

John, Mark, etc,

Has anyone tried Vectr? I was getting re-acquainted with Pixlr this summer and noticed this free vector software tool from same developer that looks like it might work well for Chromebooks, similar to Gravit. But haven't had time to look into it yet.

We have been using Onshape with our high school students for the past 2 years.  It is free for educational use and web based.  It is very smooth and allows real time collaboration on designs that can be saved in many formats for 3D printing etc.  It's more of a traditional CAD program (rather than drag and drop shapes) but I have done short summer camps for 5th and 6th graders and they've had no trouble catching on quickly.
