A student recently became interested in creating some 3D objects by combining layers of material from the laser cutter.

Did some quick google searches but nothing workable really came up.  Does anyone have a modern, preferably free alternative that I can share with the student?

My understanding is that the 123D Make functionality has been absorbed into a  Fusion 360 add-on app. (Autodesk moved most of their 123Dxxx functions into either Tinkercad or Fusion 360.)  So if you have educational access to Fusion360, that might be a good place to start. Although the app doesn't have the best reviews....! (I haven't tried it since it was absorbed; it was ok but a bit,um, ideosyncratic when it was standalone.)

The add on app Slicr for 360 is 123D Make and it is stand alone you don't need to have fusion open or working.  We have used it a few times now and it works great.

I agree....we've used Slicer this year and it works great.  Actually better than 123D Make did...it was very glitchy.
