Hi,

I need to get code off a microbit and back into Makecode where the code originated so students can edit it.  The MB website mentioned a piece of software called ubit, which I downloaded.  I saved the code as a hex file coming off the microbit but Make code will not accept it back as an import.  I am using a .hex extension but keep getting an error that says "Sorry, we could not recognize this file."

Does anyone one have experience with this?  Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,

John

Hi John -

I was under the impression that you had to Share the code/Publish, then send the link on to others. Or, use the QR code to share with your students.

If you find the answer, I'd be curious as well!

The alternative blocks-based (and LIVE) programming environment for micro:bit and a lot of other hardware can do what you want. It's called "plug share". You simply select "open from board" from the file menu, plug in your micro:bit, and viola!, your blocks appear in the IDE.

Main MicroBlocks website: http://microblocks.fun/
Wiki content describing this capability: https://wiki.microblocks.fun/ide#file

I know it doesn't help the immediate issue with a board already programmed using MakeCode, but if you try MicroBlocks, you might end up like me and never want to use any other physical computing tool again... ;)

I had similar trouble when I was using the Tinkercad Circuits / Microbit to prototype a project, and then tried to import it in Make Code.
It was hex file, but it did not recognize the file type.
I thought it might have something to do with Version 1 vs. Version 2 hardware and tried both.

I recreated the project in MakeCode and downloaded it then tried to import it and it seemed to work.
I'm in Microbit land this afternoon, so I'll  try again.

Thanks!

I am using the Microbit/Hummingbird combo to program and  have had no luck so far.  Does Microblocks work with Hummingbird and also, I believe I counted it out last time I looked at it because I didn't think it worked on Chromebooks.

Does MicroBlocks support micro:bit/Hummingbird? Yes. Tom Lauwer (BirdBrain Technologies CEO and MicroBlocks project team advisor) wrote a MicroBocks library for the Hummingbird.

Does MicroBlocks run on Chromebooks? Yes. It can also run directly in a Chrome (or Edge) browser now that WebSerial is officially supported by those browsers. And it can be installed natively on Mac, Linux, and Windows. (Native install works best imho.)

Happy to help anyone who would like to learn about and receive a quick tutorial on MicroBlocks. I can set up a zoom call.
