Hello my dearest maker ed community,

This is a truly bittersweet moment for me as I have decided to step down as the Director of the Bourn Idea Lab at Castilleja School. I will be taking on the position of Interim I-Lab Director at Nueva School next academic year - truly excited for the new adventures ahead, including more time with my no-longer-a-baby son.

But before I go, I would love to hand off the program at Castilleja to someone fabulous, who will be able to take the program to new and better heights! Castilleja is truly a fantastic place to work and thrive as an educator, with amazing students, wonderful colleagues, and strong support from the leadership team.

The job posting is now up on the Castilleja website - we have reframed the job title so the position is now called Director of Making and Engineering (so you no longer have to worry about responding to questions about whether the position is related to Jason Bourne or any movies in the Bourne Identity franchise. 😂)

Since I am not officially part of the interview/search process, I would be happy to answer any questions you might have about the position informally and offline. Please help me share widely within your various networks.

Thank you to this community and of course, this is in no way a goodbye - I will continue to be an active part of this fabulous group, even though my email address might look a little different now... ;)

Angi ❤

Angi, best of luck to you on your new venture. Nueva is such a terrific fit for the great work you do.

Thank you for opening up your school to us way back in 2013 for a visit. It inspired us to get started and I'm grateful for that. I know you will continue to have a positive impact in your new capacity and of course here on the boards.

Angi,

Let's just assume that this is Facebook and I posted a heart like.

Castilleja's loss is, fortunately, not our loss. You are an extraordinary part of the MakerEd community.

Angi,
You have been a true leader in the effort to make "making" in schools meaningful to students, educators, and the entire world! I know this will continue at Nueva. Your influence at Casti will continue on, and now Nueva is equally lucky to have you on their team. Best wishes on your new adventure.

Angi,
I have just been revisiting notes I took at the start of the process of opening our small library tinkerspace here.  Your name features heavily, although I have yet to visit the lab.  I particularly loved the challenge you posted in 2013 to do an open ended cancer interactive exhibit.  Could you let us know how that  project looks now that you have girls who have more familiarity with the lab, the tools and the design ideas.

Looking forward to hearing what you do at Nueva.

Thanks everyone for the very kind and encouraging words -- making a big change like this is hard but it's so great to know I always have this community to rely on! So for sure, you'll continue to see me around here. And even though I won't be at Castilleja anymore, empowering girls in maker ed/engineering/STEM will continue to be a major focus of my work. :)

And Sarah, the cancer bio project is definitely one of the coolest projects we've been involved in, because it really allows students to take the project in wildly different directions. However, we've only run that project one more time (I think? Maybe two at most) since 2013 because the class has not been offered due to other elective offerings in the science department. I would say that we do see a higher level of skills and engagement with students in recent years because they have had many years to become familiar with the lab (i.e. they've "grown up with the lab"). It helps a lot when students come in with a sense of what they can do with the tools we have, even if they don't remember the exact details of how to do it, because then they are automatically thinking about how to execute design ideas and options. We do tend to upgrade our workflow so unless a student is doing stuff in the lab consistently every year, we usually have to show them the latest workflow, but that's actually not too big of a deal because we try to be pretty good about posting instructions near the tools that students (and teachers) can rely on.

Hope this helps!
Angi
