I was visiting Francesca Zammarano at UNIS the other day and we came up with a neat idea - have students make short videos for each tool and skill and post them on QR code stickers on or by the tools themselves. This would allow kids to explore tools at their own pace and might free up the teacher from explaining how to strip a wire ten times during a session, for instance. Aside, making the videos is a great design project for students. They’ll have to learn the tool or skill really well and think about structuring the information. The best part is that all of us here on this list could have our kids contribute and build a great library of quick how-to videos: soldering, using a drill press, sewing a zipper, etc etc. We might develop some guidelines- I expect we want videos to be subtitled, for instance. We could say no faces to avoid privacy issues. We can post the videos to youtube, hopefully using ad-free school accounts.

Any interest in this?

Best

I love it.  Been trying to figure out how to do this myself as well.  I have 47 students signed up for lunchtime makerspace and 1 of me for the 3 times a week 30 minute time slot.  Right now its barely controlled mayhem and I dont feel like I have been much help to anyone!

Count me in! I love the idea of collaborating with others, perhaps working off a main list and sharing the videos.

This is a great idea.  I could work on some videos on some of the tools, but not until after Christmas.  Margaret

Thanks everyone. I'm going to cook up a simple web app that will let us upload video urls and QR codes and have a searchable front end. My Design Engineering class will make tool vids as their next project. I'll post as soon as the app is up.

Best

We actually started our own You-Tube channel a few years ago.  The Video students helped create short "how-to" videos that we posted there and then we also created more detailed ones to cover the equipment.  They are a requirement to watch before ever touching one of the machines in our lab.

We also  have them linked to QR codes by the machines in the hopes of eliminating the teacher "I need you" problem...it does help!

Sammie, would you mind if I included them in the repository?

I'd be interested in seeing this when you have it finished.
