TGIF everyone,

I am looking into upgrading our microsoft xbox kinect + skanect for something with higher resolution for 3D printing. We also have a structure sensor + ipad but I haven't had as much luck getting it to work (maybe I should try again before writing that...) Since it's been a couple of years since I've last researched this, I was hoping someone had a set up that they were happier with.

Currently looking to scan objects that are 18" x 18" x 18" or smaller.

In gratitude,

Hi Clint

We just got the Structure Sensor toward the end of last year and we've been impressed with the quality of those scans (to be honest, we were mostly scanning ourselves and our students, but still...)

I would suggest you give it another try.

Krista

Has anyone tried the Structure Core to use with robotics as well?  Considering it...

What is your budget? If you can get into the 2-3k USD territory for an investment you could purchase an older Shinning einscan scanner off ebay or another auction site. The new scanners they sell are in the 10-20k range, but the older gens work fine and the software is ok. The einscan pro units can do fixed on a turntable or rapid handheld mode for larger items. Essentially they compete with industrial scanners in the 15k and 50k range. With this type of scanner you could easily scan mechanical parts for robots and reverse engineer parts. I do it all the time. It's also very good at more "organic shapes". I can send some sample scans if you'd like. Shining also makes a good amount of turntable only units. I imagine they  are the same type of quality, but I can't be sure. You can easily scan things and 3d print from an einscan, it exports to stl and has some basic cleanup features built into the software (make manifold, etc).
