Thanks so much, Jaymes!
I will check it out for sure. I'm looping in the Fablabs list, hoping we might get other recommendations.

Hope that you are well, too,
Joanne

Joanne,

I like the Brother PE line. At Teachers College and Franklin, we have the PE 800 and it's fairly easy to use. Not sure if Brother offers repair plans. But I'm sure you can get a good warranty. I'd be curious to hear other recommendations. Is Susan Ettenheim on this list?

 Hope you are well!

Hi, All!

Does anyone have an embroidery machine that they love

I would like to add one to my Graphics Lab which supports students in grades 4-12 (sometimes younger) so ideally, one that is easy to learn but has rich functionality (low floor, high ceiling...)

I am aware that good tech/repair support (a plan?) for these machines is important, so appreciate any related guidance.

Kind regards,
Joanne

Brother SE600 is my go-to with Embrilliance software (more intuitive than Stitch Artist or InkScape) Not cheap, but you can write to them for a 30% discount to make it sting less.

I also love the Brother SE600!! I like that in one machine we can sew or embroider.  It saves space in my school-based fab lab.

I used and enjoyed the Brother dedicated machine, although I know that version I used no longer exists.

I now use the Bernina 5xx series with the embroidery attachment and I don't think ever  disliked a machine so much that produces such consistently great results.

Its every complaint about "isolationist Apple" from whatever era.  Great machine, good touchscreen software, good file support.

But they have a patented hoop connector and every ring is 100€

the bobbin holders are special, and are 15€

its a workhorse machine that would cost as much as a whole Brother to get 1/2 class size material.

And it's like 5000€ for the machine and extension.

I'm happy that Bernina has supported TurtleStitch and Andrea, but I do not find that much value in this machine

Marymount Fab Lab has the Brother SE600 I believe. It worked well when I was there. One feature that I really appreciated (that the SE800 lacks) is the ability to slow down or speed up stitching on the fly. Sometimes those machines go so fast, I just want to slow it down and chill out a bit. What's the hurry, Brother?!

Hi all,

We just got this machine, the Brother, Stellaire Innov-ís XE1, and the kids LOVE it. Despite the hefty price, I've already seen hundreds of hours on the machine since we purchased it in December. I went for this model because 1) touch screen & UI is relatively well done and allows ease of use; 2) all the digitizing is done in the machine so there is no need for additional software. When I and our EdTech Director looked at this machine in a local showroom, the ease of which a teacher could have students draw images on paper, snap a photo and put it onto a USB and into the machine was a much quicker process than a machine of 3K~ value. In that price range the workflow was a photo, edit in illustrator, put through whatever proprietary digitizing software, and then drop onto the machine for execution. With our 45 minute class periods for middle schoolers, the latter just did not make any sense, while the former is feasible in the short time frame. Happy to answer more technical/workflow questions if you're curious.

Another plus of this machine is the following. We have a 5000sqft makerspace at our school with an internal program of interns that help us run the shop and engage the larger student body/create agency. We started this internship in the past year for those that would typically not see themselves in a "STEM" space and this machine has helped intrigue a lot of students who I normally wouldn't interact with. 10/10 would recommend.

Kindly,
Cassie

That sounds fantastic!  Can you share some examples of student drawings and the corresponding stitch?

I love the speed up on digitization, but it sounds like the real triumph is the intern program that keeps hands on the machine all day!

Hi all,

Apologies for the delay on examples, I've been in the midst of a hiring search and haven't had much time to come up for air. The images below are from two of our interns and include some created examples as well as a screenshot of the preview in Brother's UI.

Feel free to ask more questions and I will do my best to answer them in a timely manner. :)

Kindly,
Cassie

Dear NYCIST and Fab Labs,

Sorry to come to this very helpful embroidery machine conversation so late and for the double posting. Just completed a big project and now have time to decide upon and order a second embroidery machine that will be used primarily for Turtlestich. I am thinking about the SE600 or the PE-800.

I do like that the SE600 can do other kinds of sewing.

And I like that the PE-800 has a larger hoop area.

Then there is that difference in price....

My current machine, an older Brother PE-770, has had issues with its tension. Sew Jersey in East Hanover NJ did a great job fixing it. Shout out to Colin Anton-Samuel for that recommendation!  Another frustration I've had is that the number of turtle stitch designs it can store is quite limited. That limitation makes it harder to use with larger classes with lots of unique designs.

Between the Brother SE600 and the Brother does anyone have any thought about how these two machines would handle these two potential issues?

Best,

Judith

I have the SE600 and use a flash drive to get student designs to the machine.  I rarely store anything in the machine's memory so that has never been a problem.
