Hi everyone

Has anyone tried any of the patternmaking CAD packages out there? I'd like to offer a fashion design course where students design clothing in 3D and cut the fabric pieces on a laser cutter, then sew them together to make clothing. It seems there are some high-end industrial packages (Gemini, e-Telestia, Optimark) and some mom-and-pop looking options. Any thoughts?

Thanks
Josh

I would very much like to be part of this convo, as I am also interested in developing this type of fabrication in my lab as well.

I can't find those packages.  I just had a student talking to me about this today.

Here's a blog that lists what seems to be most of the software out there:

It doesn't mention Optitex, one of the professional ones. They've offered me educational pricing at $1700 per license (wow). I'm going to do a remote eval via some sort of screensharing demo they offer. Will advise.

Has anyone tried anything else?

Hi Joshua- have a look at 2d techsoft. It has been used for many years, laser compatible and very easy to repeat designs to create patterns. It is however (like most packages) Windows based.

Have you seen 123Dmake?  It can unwrap a 3D model into panels that you can sew.  It might not be as powerful as you'd like.

Thanks Kate, Corey. It seems that patternmaking has a lot of clothing-specific rules that make the process a little different from using straight-ahead CAD. I'll report back as soon as I see the optitex demo.

The new meshmixer update (3.0) now comes with an unwrap feature (flatten 3D shapes in to 2D shapes) and SVG export. See the release blog post here: http://blog.123dapp.com/2016/01/makers-toolbox-meshmixer-3-0-lands
