Anyone have a contact at Corel now that free Vector accounts are gone?

Looks like after Corel bought Gravit Designer and rebranded it Corel Vector, they did away with free accounts and now only offer a 15-day free trial on new accounts, so new students seem to be out of luck after 2 weeks (unless I am missing something major here)
Anyone have a contact at Corel we could advocate to, or have a free or low-priced web-based vector drawing alternative? Or maybe some planning on using a handful of class-wide paid accounts? Sad that serving the education community does not seem like it was part of their acquisition plan. Hope we won't be limited to Google Drawings for laser cutter design.

Well, we use Inkscape, which is free and pretty powerful, but it isn’t the most intuitive.  Kinda a love/hate relationship with it, tbh.

I haven't talked to them since they became part of Corel, but before that they were willing to offer a pretty affordable price for all of my students to have paid accounts.  Unfortunately, Gravit was just too good to stay free forever!

Thank you,
Paul

Thanks for the Inkscape rec. love Inkscape. For those of us at Chromebook schools, we are limited to web-based tools.

Hello everyone!

We also use Inkscape also I try to avoid it as much as I can because the interface and user experience is really harsh for beginner. At the FacLab where I facilitate workshop I‘ve recently experienced  https://cuttle.xyz/ which has just l’ai inches with free account and is a vector design web based program especially made for CNC machines (laser cutter,  vinyl cutter, CNC milling…) It’s so good in terms of beginner user experience, we love it 😍! You might want to give it a try !

This cuttle.xyz is great!  Thanks for sharing, it's a great solution for designing on Chromebooks!

Thank you for all your suggestions for alternatives! Did not realize Inkscape had a Chromebook version, and I'm having a great time trying out vector drawing programs this afternoon!

It looks like Figma might be a reasonable option.  I just got a free Educator account but haven't played with it much yet.

Figma is great. I’ve been using it with my middle school students for a while and they like it.

We’ve been using Inkscape. I’m not sure how it compared to Corel but it works well with HS students creating vector files for laser cutting. That being said I don’t think it’s super intuitive so am open to other apps!

I would also love to find a contact at Corel to learn more about how they might be a good product for schools that require a Student Data Privacy agreement to be signed before a product can be used at their school.  I started this conversation with someone a few years ago and go nowhere.

Is anyone else here from a district that requires Student Data Privacy agreements?
If so what do you use for for vector creation.
Inkscape would work, except that most schools are Chromebook schools.

thanks for the tip on inkscape on chromebooks. since the stand-alone app tends to crash a lot (even with the update), that is good to know.
i agree that it is not intuitive at all so perhaps well try cuttle at some point!

Hello Lucie, et al,

I like Vectr.com https://vectr.com/ because you can use it online without needing an account. It also has some good vector capability and geometric logic. Here are the terms of service https://vectr.com/terms-of-use.html which states:

You must be sixteen (16) years old or older to use or access the Service. If you are under sixteen (16) years old, Your use of the Service must be directly supervised by Your parent or guardian or another authorized adult (e.g., a teacher) who agrees to be bound by this Agreement. Any use or access to the Service by anyone under sixteen (16) years old who is not directly supervised by an adult is strictly prohibited and in violation of this Agreement.

Does this pass muster for use in school or at home?

Thanks Diane
I personally agree that having parent sign a permission slip that says "we'll supervise them at school, and you supervise them at home" should work.
Some schools required a full fledged Student Data privacy agreement which many companies will not sign.  Even TinkerCad which is geared to schools provided pushback about signing one.  I understand that the movement towards Student Data Privacy is important, but it is at a cost.

Also, One of the schools I work with just switched from Chromebooks to iPads, so I am starting to explore what IOS vector apps are out there.
(missing days when we all used laptops ;-)

Let's all keep sharing our way through this process of providing 'all students' the opportunity to learning through making.
Thanks all

Lucie

I use Figma for almost all my design work now (laser, logo design, web/app UI/UX, and slideshows too). It's too good.

I used to love Inkscape but Figma is just way easier to use and equally/more powerful.

I admit I haven't figured out how to fully get vector-cutting to work with our Trotec laser using Figma (works fine with CorelDraw). Just need to experiment more.

Hi Adam,

As long as you have a paid Pro account for Corel Vector they should give you student accounts for free. That's the deal I got. I don't have a particular contact there but if you email their general support you should get a quick reply.

Best,
Brad

Curious to hear the answer to this. My students use Chromebooks and used Gravit Designer, and now we don't have a vector based program for them.

Thanks

Iwan
