Does anyone have an Ultimaker 3D printer? 3, 2+, 2+ extended or even the S5? I have an Original + that I put together several years ago, it's no longer working and we are looking into buying a new 3D printer. I am interested in something that is plug and play and reliable. Open to other brand suggestions too...

Thanks for any thoughts!

I got my Original Prusa Mk3 back in May and haven’t looked back.  It is plug and play reliable, with industry-best support and print quality.  If something goes wrong, they will walk you through the fix and/or ship you new parts for free.  The flexible build plate is its killer feature — no more scraping things off of the build plate.

Kit form: $750 (it took me 12 hours over two days to build mine)
Assembled form: $900

You can get an entire classroom set of them for the price of an Ultimaker S5.  If something breaks on one of them, use another printer to print out the part to replace the broken one.

We have a 3 and 3+. Pretty amazing. Dual extrusion is a dream - both two colour and one colour with dissolvable filament. The quality of the prints is pretty extraordinary. I have a few nozzles - .8 is fast and .25 has remarkable detail. Levelling is sane, easy and consistent. I have Lulzbots too and they are good workhorses but they do not have the ease and print quality of the Ultimaker. Have seen the s5 but it seems more for industrial apps. Good luck!

Julie,

The Makerbot Rep+ is very much plug and play, but the quality is just fair. I bought 3 Prusa MK 3 printers for my new start up business and I love them.

Best of luck,

We had a 3 and some 2+ (maybe a 2).  They’re mostly pretty easy to work with.  We’ve struggled with the smallest print-nozzle jamming (and backing up in to more of the print-head).  I noticed a while back that when I sliced something for the 3 (because it happened to have the nozzle size I wanted installed) that didn’t use the dual head at all, Cura was telling me the 3 would be slower than the 2 (with the same nozzle).

We have a 3+, as well as a Lulzbot mini and a Prusa Mk 3. The Ultimaker is definitely a workhorse for use but I have had to spend more time cleaning and tuning it than the others. A lot of this probably comes from the fact that we use non-ultimaker branded filament with it so the preset profiles need to be tweaked and feeder tension has caused a few problems. The Prusa is excellent and has only required build plate cleaning every now and then with alcohol or acetone. The Lulzbot has been really easy and reliable, though print quality is not as good as the others.
