Hello Paul!

My name is Amanda, I am an engineering and robotics teacher working out of Pixel Academy in Brooklyn.

I'd love to know a little more about the judging process! I am currently a referee for the FIRST LEGO League of NYC, and I teach a variety of makerspace related classes, as well as coach two robotics teams for a girl scout troop, and the Portfolios School in Tribeca.

I am fascinated with the Rube Goldberg competition, and would love to be a part of it!

Amanda

Hi Amanda,

I would love to have you join us. In fact, if you wanted to bring some of your kids to show off some of your robotics, that would be fantastic. We don't really have a robotics program, but some of our lower school kids are doing some robotics projects and they will be showcasing some of their projects. We would certainly love to have your kids showcase theirs as well!

In terms of the judging of the Rube Goldberg competition goes, I have attached the full rule book. It looks complicated at first, but in reality, it is quite simple. The teams run their machines twice. Referees rate the machines on technical items like the number of energy transfers, and judges rate them on more subjective areas like humor, artistry, creativity. (We need both referees and judges).

If you can join us, it would probably require that you be here at Fieldston on March 1st from around 11 am to 3pm.

We have been toying with the idea of starting a robotics program here, but we really don' have a faculty member who can do that. I would love to chat with you sometime about what it takes to get a robotics program up and running.

In any case, let me know if you think you (and even some students) can join us.

Best,

Paul

BTW, here are examples of some of our previous machines.
Here is one that applies a Band-aid.
Here is one that pours a bowl of cereal
Here is one that puts money in a piggy bank.

This year's task is to turn off a light. The winner of our contest will compete in the national finals in Indiana in April.

Hi Paul,
I would like to sign up to judge!  I was going to email you directly but then I saw Amanda's reply and realized she wrote pretty much what I was going to write!  I also run a makerspace and coach robotics both at Dwight-Englewood and for Girl Scouts and would be happy to join your conversation with her about that.  My FLL team has been looking to do some outreach and share their projects so perhaps some students could come.
Our school has a fairly new Rube-Goldberg club, advised by our Engineering teacher, that might be interested in joining the league next year.  I would love to judge and get a feel for what types of projects students make and bring some ideas back to the club.   The examples that you posted are amazing!

I look forward to hearing from you with more details.  Thank you.
