Hi Everyone,

Is there a way for an 11 or 12 year old to create a tinkercad account without lying about her age?

Forgive me if this problem has addressed already.

Thanks!

Nora

Sadly, no. The realities of COPPA implementation mean that great web tools either have to adopt a radically limited options for connectivity between users (see Scratch), or put themselves out of reach for users under 13.

When working with my 7th grade classes, I will often just create one or two class accounts, normally with passwords like "honesty" and "telling the trust is normally best."

Nora,

I was curious about the same question, so I contacted their tech support yesterday and received this email:

Hi Tami,

We recently made some posts about education accounts.  In a nutshell, we're building infrastructure that will adhere to the new COPPA regulations – which apply to users under 13 years of age.  That will eventually inform the structure of education accounts for educators with students of all ages.  For now, we are limited to users over that age, but we're hoping to roll out the edu changes asap.

You're not alone! If you have any feature suggestions for education accounts – post them here – we'd love to hear it.

Thanks,

Andrew

In the mean time, I wonder if using the method Animoto suggest for younger kids would work: http://help.animoto.com/entries/104077

Basically, you set up a classroom Gmail account and do the +1 trick.  Kids never have access to the email account, so there isn’t any personal or private info being disclosed.
