I teach at Hong Kong International School and most of our students are abroad for the summer holiday. Many of these students are in the US from mid-June to beginning of August.

Looking for quality summer programs for students in grades 3-8 in the US in making, computing, robotics, etc. As many of you do, I encourage parents to look for programs that are mainly project-based as opposed to those that simply take them through lessons.

What programs do you encourage your students to attend?

Thank you,

Brian

Aloha Brian,

'Iolani (Honolulu, HI) has an extensive summer school program for K-12 and we get a lot of international kids. Summer school info can be found at https://www.iolani.org/about/summer-school and registration opens to the public on March 5th. I do a afternoon coed 4hr "making" class the first 6weeks (4th-5th grade), then an one week/all day just girls class and the next week same thing but just boys. There are also a lot of other STEM/Robotics/Engineering classes offered for all grades. Let me know if you have any questions.

Matt...would 'Iolani accept young-at-heart lifelong learners for summer school? Inquiring minds want to know ... :)

I can see what we could work something out....what young-at-heart lifelong learning is coming to the islands? You bringing the family to Hawaii?

You should check out www.hypothekids.org -- my daughter attended from K-5 and is moving into the middle school program. It teaches children STEM subjects grade levels above what is taught in schools in a very creative and engaging way.

Hey Brian,
Duke School in Durham, NC has quite a few Maker summer programs. Go through week by week. Let me know if you have any questions!
Thanks,
Katie

Someone else asked me this same question just a couple days ago and here are some I found in the SF Bay Area that seem legit:

Tinkering School
Galileo Camps (not just in Bay Area)
Project Ember
Camp Edmo
Also the Crucible in Oakland have youth camps too.

And for older kids (high school), many of my students have done and enjoyed BlueStamp Engineering, one of the few engineering summer programs I've found that is totally hands-on, project-based and not just "sit in a room and listen to lectures."
