Good morning

We have been asked to thoughtfully review our approach to safety in our K-5 and 6-12 Maker Space and Fab Lab, in the same way we regularly review safety concerns in our science labs.

Does anyone have any recommendations for companies/agencies that will perform a safety audit for our spaces?  We have our "common sense" approaches and student safety guidelines in place.  An external audit will help us identify safety issues we might not recognize.

Eric-

What a great question- one that we rarely see asked in this group!  Anyway, I have experience with Educational Fab Lab Assessment, though it might not be what you are looking for. My team and I developed an assessment protocol in which lab safety is one dimension in our approach. We also assess 4 other domains, with the end goal of developing strategic action plans for schools to more effectively use their maker space and advanced technologies for integrated curriculum-based learning. We developed this approach in a school-based lab in Torres Vedras, Portugal for the local government (city hall) back in 2019 and have been brought back twice for re-assessment (going a third time in July!). Though their goal is more about the quality of the learning, processes, and protocols of operating the lab for education, safety is one piece of that puzzle. I'd be happy to talk with you about that process and whether or not we can develop just a safety evaluation for your school needs. Send me a message!

Best of luck,
Liz Whitewolf, eduFAB
