I'm considering purchasing a Roland GS-24 vinyl cutter. I want something that both prints designs and cuts them out. Do most vinyl cutters do this, or do I need to find a vinyl cutter/printer? Obviously I don't know much about these things and would appreciate any ideas on brands and models.
Thanks,
Joe

The GS-24 is a cutter. It does not print.

It does have an optical sensor and is capable of cutting contours, meaning following the outline of a design. But to do that on large objects requires a separate large format printer.

No, most consumer vinyl cutters do not also print.  I received some marketing materials from Roland and their color print & cut vinyl machines were in the $10,000 range.  It's very possible they make cheaper models but I haven't looked into it beyond that.

We use a US Cutter SC model for vinyl cutting but have been considering Roland machines as well.

Why not print out with a traditional printer, and print a cross hairs homing position that can be aligned with the vinyl cutter's knife edge before cutting them out? You would need to feed the vinyl sticker material in very square/perpendicular/parallel with regards to the feed, but it should be a close enough deal.

The smaller craft cutters (Cricut and Silhouette) do have the option for a pen head.  I would characterize them as more of a plotter than a printer.

That's a good and important distinction. I'll take print to mean "generate full color output from Photoshop."  Plotters do mono color SVGs.

Silhouette Studio software (comes with the Cameo) has a "print and cut" feature. Print your design on your regular printer with registration marks, then feed it through the cutter to cut out the shapes. http://blog.silhouetteamerica.com/2016/09/using-the-print-and-cut-feature-successfully

Super easy to use, and very budget friendly.

The ROLAND software has a similar feature. What holds it back is that most of us lack a printer large enough for 28" sheet vinyl. If you're only working on A3 or smaller, Rolan, Sillouette or even the Titan will cut contours just fine.

When you say regular printer.. are you saying that you feed  pieces of vinyl through an INK JET  printer or a Laser Printer?
