Molding and Casting

Good Morning,

I am looking to introduce molding and casting into our high school FAB lab. Any advice as I begin researching and purchasing materials would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Steve -

I took a molding and casting workshop with a professor from U of Wisconsin and he was fantastic. His Instagram profile is @taekyeom.

He has some great tips on processes and supplies, specifically for using 3D printers to make molds.

We recently published a dozen tutorials for starter Maker projects and one of them is for Rubber Stamps from 3D printed molds. Go to this page k12maker.mit.edu/tutorials and scroll down. The super-cool thing about this is the rubber is re-meltable and re-usable!

Also on that page is the Candy Casts tutorial and link to Instructable. In this project you mold chocolate (real or fake) in silicone molds that are created from 3D printed positives.

If there is a Reynolds Advanced Materials store in your area I found them to be an awesome resource when planning a project for students.

Diane, I saw this tutorial and it looks great. Do you have any recommendations for which rubber to buy? I went to Amazon and was overwhelmed by all the choices. Nothing specifically said it was remeltable.
