Hi Everyone,

I was wondering if anyone used fume extractors for their students soldering stations.

I've used a few but they don't do a very good job at what they claim to be good at. Having a high power fan circulating air through the room seems to be more effective, IMHO.

Hi Corey,

My room only has 1 window that opens and no high-powered fan.  We often have 12 soldering stations going at once.

I have 6 Weller Smoke Absorber WSA350s that I sit on the lab tables and they do a great job, in my opinion.  I have a lot of students with olfactory sensitivities and have had no complaints.

We use the Wellers at Castilleja as well but I've never been too convinced they were doing much... they are definitely better than nothing.

I recently purchased the Hakko FA400 for my personal use as I've been doing lots of soldering for my circuit prototypes and I really like it.   It has incredibly good draw when face-down and it is very satisfying watching the smoke wisps get sucked into it...

Not exactly what you were asking for, but I've opted to get tents and tables and do it outside.

Thanks for the feedback! I have a wonderful sized space, but it is in a basement. We're adding exhaust for our spray booth, laser cutter and a few other tools, so I'm hopping we can run an exhaust tube to our permanent solder stations.

Hi Corey,
What do you mean by a spray booth?
I'm building a Makerspace this summer and dealing with the requirements of a laser cutter. I'm trying to picture what a spray booth is!

A spray booth is a box with air exhaust in which to do spray painting.
