Hello gang,
I'm curious if anyone has any recommendations or has used AR software for placing 3D models/projects in locations that can be accessed later by other users. The past couple of years I've done "Redesign a Monument/Create a Monument" projects with some of our high school history classes, often using physical media. Last year I started discussing with one of the teachers about the possibility of creating virtual monuments, where a 3D model could be placed in space and then viewed on a phone by others.

I've used CoSpaces in the past for something akin to this, but was wondering if anyone else has done something similar with different software.

Thoughts and ideas appreciated,

Matthew

Hi Matthew,

I just recently started using Zoe after joining their learning cohort.   I haven't really done a deep dive yet (the lessons begin this week) but it seems pretty robust allowing you to use and create assets and create interactions with them.  I'd check it out.

Jesse

Good morning, several years ago we ran a similar project in advance of our 7th grade trip to Washington DC.

A student group found a work flow where they created a 3D model of their proposed monument/memorial in Sketch Up (utilizing many of the warehouse supplies to build out what looked like a really nice representation of the full site including benches, trash bins, trees, etc). Then they exported the file into Google Earth and pinned it to the exact spot on the DC mall where they would propose their new monument.

Part of the assignment was recording a Google Earth tour of the proposed site where they would want to build their monument. You can imagine how their tour really wowed, when it had the design for the monument included within the site tour!

It’s been awhile since we did this so I don’t have the workflow saved anywhere and I am unsure if the potential process for this looks like, but I bet it’s still there. It was a cool result.

For virtually placing physical representations that students have built, one of our Lab Directors has mastered the CoSpaces process with some really cool results. If you absolutely want to include the physically built prototype in a virtual environment, that may be the way to go. For the project described above, we used Sketch Up for students to come up with their design plan and then the built their prototype models from there, so it made sense to just use their designs within the Google Tour.

Good Luck,

Anna

why not have them also make physical models of their monument? We have a design a landmark project and use cardboard to make models and several app options for making a commercial to highlight key features. We do a lot with accessibility, diversity, sustainability  etc... https://www.3duxdesign.com/pages/gfdl-landmark-project-by-3dux?_pos=2&_sid=37704114d&_ss=r

Tinkercad lets you view designs with AR through their iPad app. I have short vids showing how to view and record video tours of models. This is not quite what you're looking for, but it might be of interest.

Zoe is a great platform and user friendly, and I've used CoSpaces with and without the Merge cube in the past with my 9th and 10th graders.  If your school has access to the Adobe Creative Cloud suite of tools, Aero is a great app that we've enjoyed the most lately.  Others we have used are Blippar, 3DBear, Assemblr EDU, and some tools that have come and gone like Aurasma.

Having used a number of different AR platforms (still a big fan of CoSpaces), I would definitely check out Hoverlay. Used it for a couple of years across a few schools- amazing variety of use cases (virtual timelines, parallel stories, centennial celebration alumni events, etc...). Happy to connect if you want to check out some examples. It's also been leveraged in different cities with art installations, historical societies, tourism boards etc... so you may be able to check out an exhibit near you.

Best,

Tom Corbin
