Our 6th graders are making catapults but we are limited with the number of computers we have with Inkscape for them to work on. Can anyone suggest an app for the iPad that they can use? They are designing them on paper, making cardboard prototypes, making final paper designs...then I am scanning their designs and emailing it to them. They are opening the pdf up in Inkscape, tracing the design and emailing the .svg to the laser cutter.

Because we don't have enough computers, this seems to be the easiest way to do it...But we are a 1to1 iPad school so if there is a good/simple app that we can put on their iPads I'd do it that way.

Any suggestions would be greatly welcome.

Aloha.
Matt

Matthew,

Inkpad is free on the App store and has some pretty good reviews.

I had a similar need regarding taking either a picture or a hand drawing, then turning it into vector for laser cutting. The one app I discovered that does this well is called Vectorize It, it's part of the autodesk suite for iPad. It will take a first pass at something, then allow you to tweak as necessary, similar to what live trace does in illustrator.

If you end up using it, I'd love to hear how it works out for you.

Thanks John. I'll give it a try too. As well as Sketch it-Make it (which I think is now Zotebook)...thanks Jaymes. And you may want to pack you warm cloths...it's been cold here...in the 70s at night.

Aloha!

We use iDraw here (not free - about $8) on the iPad to do vector drawing for laser cutting. It's worked pretty well for us, especially when paired with Vectorize It since iDraw cannot do auto-tracing of imported JPGs.

Thanks Angi. I'll get 'Iolani to buy me a copy and I'll play with it.

I just found out that a group of kids that is showing up next week for a project are not showing up with computers or chromebooks as I expected, but instead showing up with ipads - SURPRISE!

Found this thread on potential solutions for creating designs that might be able to be laser cut -
but since its a few years old.. thought I'd see if any new favorites have come up  or if the ones mentioned here are risen to your list of favorites.

Hi everyone.

I am back on the hunt for an ipad app for our K-4 students. We had been using zotebook (previously Sketch it Make it), and loving it, but since it doesn't work with the new iOS yet I need to find an alternative.

What ipad apps do you use for younger children to design for the laser cutter?

Adobe Illustrator Draw is one option, particularly since it transfers well to Adobe Illustrator for any tweaks or changes that might need to be made before laser cutting/etching.
