Is it possible to use jzebra on Chrome OS?

Unlikely as I understand NPAPI is non-existent in Chrome OS.

In theory, one could force-install Java and use our up-coming NPAPI-free version, but that is still in alpha development, will be available to Premium customer only and Chrome OS is not currently a supported platform, which means we would not do any testing on it.

Google Chrome is on a path to completely eliminate the old Netscape NPAPI plugin framework from the web browser, so this makes any solution based on the Java Applet technology a ticking time bomb with Google products (unless Oracle releases a special Google-Play approved Pepper API version of the Java plugin... something Oralce hasn't made any public statements on).

Tres,

we're a premium customer and use jZebra on Chrome/Win for a mid-size enterprise deployment.
If I understand correctly Google will drop Java support by the end of 2014, so we won't be able to use jZebra anymore?
What do you recommend? Will there be an alternative solution?

Thanks
JT

@Johannes,

We're racing the clock (or calendar) to have a version ready for the end of 2014 for our premium customers.  We will send notification when we have a beta available.  I'll send you a separate email with some more details.

What this means is that the Chrome Browser will stop supporting Java Applets like the jzebra/qz plugin we are using?
And this will happen at the end of the year?
So what is the plan? Will you be able to release an updated version at least for premium customers that will work on Chrome Browsers and that will not be based on Java;
This is a huge change for you Tres, will you be able to pull this off?
We will need to see a new updated version a lot sooner because there will be issues and bugs for sure when it comes to new code.

We are actively working on a solution to this.  Since a large development like this costs time and money it is likely to be a premium feature only.

The solution includes installing the applet locally on each computer, so the deployment strategy changes and as you've said, we need to get this out as soon as possible.

For the non-premium customers... If we offer this functionality in our free version down the road, it will likely be on a time-limited trial basis.

If any free users have some deployment expertise and would like to help expedite some of these tasks, we'd be happy to work out an exchange. :)

I would gladly become a premium user if there is a qz-print solution for printing from chromebook users.   Is there an update on the progress?

@Tim,

Although we will have a NPAPI-free version of qz-print very shortly, its ability to run on a Chromebook has not yet been evaluated.

The future version, coined "qz-tray" currently is designed to still run on top of Java however it no longer needs the NPAPI/ActiveX applet objects to run.
