Dear St. Markans,

I've been asked to forward to you a conference opportunity with the Synod that might be a resource for our social justice ministries. Would you please pass this on to your respective teams?

Shalom,
Bart

I bring you greetings from the Synod of the Southwest in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

The violence in our world is on the rise, fear is rampant, the gap between the haves and the have not's is widening. Without a doubt it behooves us as followers of Jesus Christ and the Church to become more proactive in issues of social justice and to address the plight of the marginalized in our society, sharing the hope found in the Gospel. Thus said, I am delighted to be able to invite you to an event, “Serving the Marginalized”, at the Doubletree in Tempe, AZ. The guest Presenter will be the Rev. Dr. Carolyn Helsel, an assistant professor of homiletics at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary. Dr. Helsel earned her PhD from Emory University where her research project focused on how white preachers can preach about race in predominantly white congregations which emerged from here ministry experiences on the US-Mexico border in Yuma, AZ; San Antonio, Texas; and, Boston, Massachusetts.
