Animals and pets
Pet dogs
More and more koreans are adopting pets these days. More people keep
dogs as pets than any other kind of animal. Nowadays every korean
supermarket and discount store has a section just for dog food and
other toys or things for dogs.
Dogs can be wonderful house pets, since they are lovable and loyal to
their owners. They also have sharp teeth and a loud bark, so they can
guard the house from unwanted strangers and burglars.
Many people don't realize that dogs, like people, also need love and
affection. Just giving a dog water and food is not enough to make it
happy. Sometimes dogs want their owners to paly with them.
Keeping a dog as a house pet is a full-time job. Besides regular
feedings and playtimes, a dog also needs outdoor exercise at least
twice a day- usually once in the morning and once in the evening.
Dogs also need to have baths, just as people do. Especially if the dog
stays in the house most of the time, a clean dog will mean a clean-
smelling house.
Many people don't realize all the benefits that dogs give back to
their owners in return for all the time and care spent on them. For
example, researcher in the U.S. found that old people who have pets-
dogs or cats-live several yeard longer than old people who live alone.
Having a pet to take care of gives an old person a reason to live.
Also, people who have pets have less stress and happier lives than
people who don't have pets.
