Maa Bhoomi is a 1979 Telugu film based on the Telengana Rebellion in Hyderabad State. It also depicts a typical life of villagers under feudalistic society in Telangana region. It was the first feature film of acclaimed Indian diector Goutam Ghose.
Maa Bhoomi is classic in every sense. It is not only of the greatest Telugu films ever made but also the best artistic film. Based on the Telangana armed struggle, the revolt against the dreaded Rajakars, Maa Bhoomi was directed by then debutant Gowtham Ghose now an accomplished director and cinematographer.
The film is also remarkable for its honest filmmaking style a very rare at the time of the film made in Telugu, as most of the films that were being made at that time were mindless masala films with big bellied old heroes in their 50s singing and dancing with teenage girls.
Telangana armed struggle is considered to be the greatest freedom struggle that India has ever witnessed. The theme is inspiring, and the execution by Gautham Ghose and all the crew by terrific. He had captured heroic peasant struggle of Telengana and the oppressive feudalism of the Rajakars or Doras of the Nizam state.
B Narsing Rao, a young painter then and Ravindranath were the two enthusiastic film buffs. They were so inspired by the Krishan Chandra's famous Urdu novel Jab Khet Jaage (1948) that they dreamt of making this novel into a film. Within no time they had gathered the resources to make the film and approached documentary filmmaker and cinematographer Gautam Ghose to direct it.
The young man brimming with ideas that he was, Ghose spent months on the script researching the Telangana villages, their way of life, and language. In fact Gautam and his wife, who costume designed for the film, spent close to two months in the villages to get the first hand info.
Perhaps, that explains the quintessential and true to portrayal of Telangana Ghadis in the film. And till date, it is the only film that captured the Telangana slang on screen perfect.Narsing and Mukhya Pran Rao have helped the Gautam in this matter.
