Hi open source community - I saw this opportunity and thought it might be of interest to you all! Deadline is coming up soon, spread the word and reach out to Grace Wickerson (gwick...@fas.org) if you have any specific questions --
Apply to the Extreme Heat Policy Sprint by December 18th, 2023
This past summer, 130 million Americans have been placed under some type of heat advisory. National records for heat were shattered each month, with July estimated to be the hottest month ever recorded on Earth. Even though extreme heat is the number one weather-related killer of Americans, it receives minimal targeted federal support and funding for planning, mitigation, and recovery. There is a need to build resilience to the heat waves yet to come. Our national response to extreme heat is still actively being developed and can be bolstered by increased federal action across the White House, Congress, and federal agencies. To ensure a rapid, equitable response to extreme heat for all Americans, high-quality policy ideas ready for action are in hot demand.
Our national response to extreme heat is still actively being developed and can be bolstered by increased federal action across the White House, Congress, and federal agencies. To ensure a rapid, equitable response to extreme heat for all Americans, high-quality policy ideas ready for action are in hot demand.
To meet this moment, the Federation of American Scientists (FAS) is launching the Extreme Heat Policy Sprint to develop high-impact policy recommendations and memos to comprehensively address the extreme heat crisis. FAS will work with the cohort of experts to synthesize these recommendations and deliver them to the Interagency Working Group on Extreme Heat and key federal agencies to drive policy uptake. We are looking for ideas that are innovative, ambitious, and actionable that are relevant to (but not limited to) the following topic areas:
Infrastructure and the Built Environment.
Workforce Safety and Development.
Public Health and Preparedness.
Food Security.
Planning and Response.
Data and Indices.
More about the program:
FAS is looking for people who are passionate and informed about a problem they want to solve. The best ideas will be selected and invited to join our program to develop their ideas into policy proposals with support from our FAS team and other veteran policymakers. Some benefits of participating include access to mentorship and training in policy development, networking with our community of experts and peers in the Extreme Heat Policy Sprint cohort, becoming equipped with the tools to champion an actionable policy proposal in the Federal Government, and having opportunities to pitch recommendations to key policymakers.
