I'm not sure if it's doing what it should - for example, when I enter
a word or phrase and click on the learner error button, I receive no
results at all. I tried in both Safari and Firefox, but not in any
Windows browsers.

Also I see no apparent difference in the results when I click on
combinations or alternatives, and I never see any red bars, only green
ones.

Finally, it's pretty slow in Safari.

Anyone having a similar experience?

apparently learner error has been disabled, if you contact developer by email requesting this with enough enquiries he may reinstate function e.g. see this interview here - http://eflnotes.wordpress.com/2013/10/21/interview-with-phil-edmonds-from-just-the-word-com/

See the "getting started" pages. It only knows phrases for which there is data in the training corpus (the BNC). Phrases such as "pass the day" or "truly magnificent" work as test cases. Type the phrase and select Alternatives of either kind.
