I am working on a research project with students, showing them how to
build a corpus of their own writing and then use tools like ANTCONC to
produce concordances, N-grams, collocate distributions, word frequency
lists/distributions of their own individual corpus of writing (their
'i-corpus'). I've also shown them how to do a keyword analysis, by
giving them an academic 'reference corpus' (the UWL corpus downloaded
from
http://lextutor.ca) and comparing word frequencies between their
corpus and a target corpus. The idea is to build on the principles of
'data-driven learning' and provide tools for self-directed learning
and language development.
I'm also using TREETAGGER, which is an open-source program that will
'TAG' a corpus. What would be wonderful is to see if JTW could offer
the user an option to upload their own TAGGED i-corpus, and then
generate a JTW pattern analysis. So, a user could get a picture of
the pattern usage of their own icorpus.
This would be taking the 'social networking' dimension of JTW to a
whole different level. Alternatively, could the JTW software be
ported to a Windows/Linux/Mac plaftrom for individual use on a PC
(like TREETAGGER or ANTCONC) so users could use it with their own
icorpus on their own computer.
