No longer a race :( was replaced by Hillinois, but I don't think that's happening this year either.

Hahahaha.  If we all gonna travel to ride bikes together, give us mountains, maybe some epic gravel, and some weed.  But seriously fuck 12 year-olds trying to kill themselves, and us.  I will gladly travel to ride bikes and hang out with you dudes.

Sophia and I will be heading to KY at some point in July for a family reunion and it's only about an hour an a half from Asheville. I'm thinking I could come down for a weekend.

Well aren't y'all a thoughtful bunch... I would be fucking ecstatic to be able to rendez-vous with you lot for a good ol' brownie century. As it stands right now we'd probably be looking at the weekend of the 15th/16th of July, plus the following Mon/Tue. That's a ballpark at the moment. We have to be in NYC on the evening of Wednesday the 19th, and will be coming from Memphis, so any other destination would be between the two, and prior to NYC.

Thanks for checking back in Ed. Sophia's great aunt is planning the family reunion and hasn't locked down a date yet. Last I head it might be the 15-16th in Knoxville. It's only 2hrs from Asheville and I could at least drive over and Stay a night or two.

If the weekend of july 15-16th( and maybe into the 17-18th. We were talking about spending a week in the area) works for everyone we should start looking for a house and planing some rides.

Update from our front: We'll be in the states starting on the 8th of July until the 23rd.

- Memphis from the 8th until the 12th/13th

- Nashville, then Asheville for this rendez-vous from the 13th until the 18th

- Leaving Asheville for NYC on the 19th

So the relevant bit I suppose is Asheville, at least the 14th to the 18th. And yes, I will definitely have a bike.

Let's make this shit happen.

Can we get a YES/NO/MAYBE headcount in order to decide on house size and number of beds/couches?

Any other buddies we might include? I could see if Bill wants to hop in the car and join for a weekend. Would y'all be ok with that?

Alright, so far we have a headcount of 7-8ish (Drew + Laura, Ed + Lisa, Paul, Bill, Lucas, David). We're definitely looking at either one large house or two small spots. Let's try to nail this down quickly-ish so that we can find lodging on the cheap.

As for housing, I've actually rented this place before and can recommend it:  https://www.airbnb.co.uk/rooms/7995120
(I'm in Dublin for work at the moment, so the Airbnb site is coming up as ".uk" but if this doesn't work for others, just search "trails end cabin pisgah")

To be clear, I'm not pushing this place, and totally open to other options.  But I know it, so I wanted to throw it out there.

It's in Pisgah and caters to groups of cyclists (there's fantastic vintage cycling posters & shit errrrrywhere).  There's a ton of trails around for MTBs, but they're pretty amenable to cx bikes if I recall, including some fire roads that go up to the Blue Ridge Parkway, which is also accessible right down the (normal) road without riding trails/gravel.  It's a short drive to town (closest to West Asheville).  If we want trail access and we're ok isolating ourselves in the forest, this is the place.  If walking to town is a high priority, then we'd want to look at other options.

If the list below is correct, that place would work at max capacity.

Thanks for the rec, Nate!

I AM SO STOKED ABOUT THIS GUYS

I'll see if Erin wants to come, but it will also depend on whether we can realistically fit four of us in the Prius with bags and bikes. I can borrow a bike rack from a teammate if needed. So let's call her a maybe but depending on the bed situation, we'd probably just bring an air mattress and sleep separately. Sharing anything smaller than a queen makes for a bad night of sleep for us.

If we check in on the 14th and check out on the 18th, (does that sound right?) that makes the total $1870 (showing max allowed 8 guests), which divided by 10 people is around $190 each. Presumably we could ask for permission and end up paying around $200 each. In searching through the below listings, this seems to be about what we'll hit for totals. Not bad!

I Love this one... same cost as Nate's rec but looks a little extra pimp. Big question to me is whether we can ride out the door for good roads, which I sort of assume is a big yes in this area.

Thoughts, reactions? I would feasibly stay a couple days extra after Drew has to leave if anyone wants to make a longer vacay out of it.

While I like the Treehouse, the porch on Shady Gove Lodge is unreal.

Perhaps we pick a place based on the rides? Although both of them look to be in a good location.

Stony Fork Look – 64 miles and 6K
Curtis Creek Loop – 78 miles and 7.5K
Short Pisgah Loop – 56 miles and 5K

I'm good getting Shady.  I'm concerned the Treehouse doesn't have enough beds, so I think we need to nix that one, anyway.  Black Mtn is a pretty sweet (tho fancy) town.  There's a sick coffee shop (Dripolator).  And from that place we can ride up Mt. Mitchell (highest point in NC and east of Mississippi R.).

I know this area quite well, and the trade-offs as I see them are clear:
-Shady Grove looks way nicer of a property; it's newer, more common space, bigger kitchen, etc.  It's pretty far from town, Black Mtn or Asheville, and it's a gated mountainside community, so when back at the house, we stay in the house.  The ride options are probably a bit more epic with Mt. Mitchell close by.
-The one in Pisgah is not as nice or new, and the common space is not as big or open.  But the place is literally IN the national forest, with endless miles of trails right out the door for non-cycling SOs to walk/hike/run, or any of us to explore on foot or bike; it's also way closer to town.

I do think we are gonna ride ourselves into the ground, and we'll be sitting around the house the rest of the time.  I suspect not all of us are gonna have bikes compatible with trails/gravel.  In either case, we'll need to drive to town.  But I wanted to paint a picture in case others see the options differently.

That's it.

Nate thanks for the additional info there, nice to have someone familiar with the area. I'm cool with either house, I think it does come down to riding and how many people we for sure have.

Just a quick callout on Shady - looks like there are a couple trails/etc for SOs while others are out riding. Additionally, they can always take a car into town - OR play support vehicle for us :)

* callout from Shady about the trails, etc: development is a nature preserve which has hiking trails, a lake, a trout pond and endless views. Large parking lot by the entrance gate for additional vehicles. It is a 3 minute drive from the gate to our home. Should make it easy for cars (not sure how big their parking area at the house itself is).

Much love dudes, wherever in the world each of you may be.

Alrighty, so shall we pull the trigger?  I know we've been over this, but as I have it, the final, committed count is: me (+/- Em), Drew/Laura, Ed/Lisa, Paul (+/- Erin), Lucas, Chas.  That's 8-10, but really 6 beds.  David is a maybe and Bill is a maybe, but unlikely to stay.  So ideally at least 7 beds, at least 2 and preferably 3-4 doubles, the rest can be singles.  That all seems to fit.  Max lodging cost is then $232/person based on 8, and would go down from there with more people, and/or arriving Sat instead of Fri (see proposal below).

Though we said Fri (14th)-Tues (18th), is that what we want, or should we cut a day of lodging cost and say check-in on Sat?  Personally, if I get there Fri, it will probably be very late (or red-eye in Sat am).  So with multiple folks traveling, would it be better to have folks get in and rally up at Ed's and Paul's (or elsewhere, no obligation to host!) Fri night if needed and then everyone head to Asheville early Sat?  We could still ride Sat.

Finally, who wants to volunteer to reserve the place?  Can I nominate someone who isn't also advancing costs for travel?

Let's do this shit.

Thanks for the wrangle, Nate!

It looks like Erin is in too, at least semi-confirmed which is awesome.

I think the Friday arrival is partly because that's our 5-6hr driving day from Nashville, bringing Drew & Laura up. Ed's/Bill's is not really on the way for us or else I would say a stay-over is an option. My friend Brian lives in Asheville but he and his wife won't be up for four guests. I suppose we could leave Saturday morning and arrive lunchtime on Saturday, and still get a ride in, but we'd have to ask SO's to collect food and get us all checked in so we can very quickly eat and get on bikes. My gut says let's get Friday night so we can get food, prep it, and get the house in order, but I'm open to that discussion! No one hates to save money, just don't want to accidentally lose a riding day. (Drew, I can't remember, is there something you wanted to arrive for in Asheville that Friday?) Again, totally open to discussion here.

I can do the reservation on my credit card as long as we have a clear sense of how the costs are broken down... it's per person, not per bed/couple, yes? For the risky maybes, like David, he just has to pay everyone a slice if he can make it and shows up. Whoever we can ask to confirm now, let's go ahead and lock that down if possible.

Is it reasonable to take payment (Venmo/Paypal/Chase) for this by the beginning of April for everyone, including those who gotta fly? I can stretch it out further if I know to plan on it.

So incredibly excited about this, y'all!! Love to everyone.

Should be fine paying in April. Any of the methods work for me, just let me know what you prefer.

I'm also cool with Friday or Saturday. Folks coming in from Chicago or out west are more than welcome to fly into RDU on Thurs or Fri and crash with us if that's helpful. If you think you may plan on that hit me up closer to time for the trip and we can work out the details.

Cool, sounds like Friday makes sense; I wanted to check to see what everyone was thinking.  I can pay for lodging anytime, and thanks to whomever coordinates that piece.

Very stoked this is happening.

Guys, bummer news. Shady Grove has been booked out from under us. I'm super sad about it bc it looked incredible and apparently I just sat on it too long after we reached consensus. Sorry, y'all.

There are other good options but none quite as sick. These stand out though:

I still like this one and proximity to restaurants, stores and breweries sounds nice, no difference in cost between 8 and 10 guests: https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/17222577?guests=10&adults=10&s=XGu1v4mj&check_in=2017-07-14&check_out=2017-07-18

This one looks pretty good and it's way more affordable if we book 8 people instead of 10: https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/10971202?guests=8&adults=8&s=X_TXSQvc&check_in=2017-07-14&check_out=2017-07-18

Other options? For either one we'd need to accommodate with air beds most likely. There are other large places that aren't as cool or inviting. The bear lodge looks nice except it's next to an interstate. I'm up for whatever if I can keep it under $250 per person, assuming that or lower is a good goal for everyone.

Sorry again, I'll seal the deal more quickly this time.

Ah bummer.

Think it's worth taking a look at VRBO as well? That might get us into a place where someone isn't sleeping on an air bed.

I found a couple standouts from my 5 minutes of browsing below:

Round house - sleeps up to 16. would be $256 with 8 people, $205 with 10.

Funky Condo - sleeps up to 14. would be $185 with 8 people, $148 with 10.

Cottage in the Woods - sleeps up to 10. would be $168 with 8 people, $134 with 10.

Baller Views - sleeps up to 10. would be $210 with 8 people, $168 with 10.

25 acres- sleeps up to 10. would be $221 with 8 people, $177 with 10.

Crazy ass cabin sleeps up to 10. would be $225 with 8 people, $180 with 10

Sorry, got a little carried away there. Anyway - lot's of options on VRBO. Take a look at the ones I linked and feel free to take a look at the master list, I only made it through maybe a third of the available listings.

Ed thanks for putting this together, I'm going to try and take a closer look asap. Had a rush gig pop up so I haven't had the time but if anyone else wants to start noting favorites, please do!

Thanks Ed and Paul for finding these other options.

I like the Crazy Ass Cabin or Baller Views,  and the treehouse still looks pretty nice but Cottage in the Woods looks nice and is a great price.

Paul  - if you are booking this and need 1/2 the payment up front I can send some $$$ this week.

Hey Guys,

If we are still planning on getting together this summer we may want to start getting things booked.

I just got some freelance payments in and would be happy to put down a deposit if needed.

I'm open to any of the places Paul and Ed found.

Best,
Lucas

Gentlemen.  I think I told some of you that I crashed a couple of weeks ago and dislocated my elbow.  On the mend, but the Ortho today confirmed that I won't be out of the splint and back on the bike until mid-august at the earliest.  So I'm sad to say that I'll not be making the reunion.  Miss all you guys and hope you get in some killer riding.

Dudes.  David, I'm sorry to hear about your arm, and I hope things are getting better.  I hope these happen enough over the years that an injury or missing mate becomes a wash.

I booked flights last week, coming in & out of AVL directly, since it was the same price as RDU.  I'm in Fri am and out Tues afternoon.  I don't necessarily need rides, since I could Uber, but I won't turn one down, either!  I'm super-psyched on this trip and can't wait to see everyone!

The one bummer is that Emily isn't coming.  She just started a job a couple months ago, and they need coverage those days, since a lot of folks are already out.

I'm really looking forward to seeing and catching up with everyone!

Best,
Nate

Nate, stoked you're all set and bummed that Em can't make it! We can renegotiate the split on the house when we're all together if you want.

In terms of rides, it depends on when you'll arrive but I can feasibly drop everyone at the cabin/mansion and unload the Prius and then get to the AVL airport to pick you up. Happy to do so :)  If you come in before we do, or we're overlapping travel time, you may need to Uber as the car will be pretty packed out.

I'm also driving my family sized Land Cruiser and happy to pick up folks as need be. Figured it'd be better than driving up the Subaru so that we can squeeze people in for trips from the mansion to breweries, etc between riding.

Will be bringing the following with me as well:
Work stand
Tools
Pump
Coffee stuffs (Chemex, aeropress, beans, grinder)
Small first aid kit
Etc?

Since I'm driving from home, let me know if anyone thinks of anything else that would be handy to have around.

Bummed on David and Em, but I agree with Nate, hopefully we will do these enough that it becomes a wash.

David, I'm sorry to hear you won't be able to join. Hope you recover quickly.

Sophia and I booked out flights last week. We'll be flying in to Knoxville Thursday, then we have the family reunion on Saturday. I'll probably stay until 5 then head to asheville and get in about 8:00 or 8:30. It will be great to have a pump to change my tires. I'll be heading out to KY Tuesday afternoon/evening.

Since I'll be arriving late, I'll plan to pay my share of the foods that you will have already picked up if that okay with everyone.

I'll be totally available with my car. Louise gets in late Friday, so I can plan a Nate pick up if is easier.

Random question: does anyone coming ride 650B? I have a set of somewhat nice tires around that I won't be using, as 650B ain't for me, but I'd happily pass them on to someone in Asheville
