2nd CALL FOR PAPERS

2nd Workshop on Bias, Ethics and Fairness in Artificial Intelligence in conjunction with 1st Workshop on Ethics, Morality, and Artificial Intelligence

 BEFAIR²+EMAI 2023

associated with 19th International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Law

23rd June 2023, Braga, Portugal

1.    Introduction

Rapid development of Artificial Intelligence results in increasing autonomy of artificial agents. Devices like autonomous cars started to become a normal element of our lives and other, even more sophisticated ones, are just around the corner. Such a rapid development of Artificial Intelligence has raised a number of questions concerning the ethical context of decisions made by these devices and/or decisions supported by those devices. These questions are especially important when the results of decisions they made, can cause a serious risk of harm. Although there is a number of approaches to reasoning with values, models of some ethical theories, and attempts to train machine learning-based systems moral principles, there is still a lack of comprehensive approaches to model and implement complex reality of human ethics in AI-driven machines.

2.    Topic and goals, significance

Goals: The aim of the workshop is to provide space for exchange of methods, models, and ideas concerning the research on implementing moral and ethical principles into AI-driven tools and to develop a shared understanding of bias, ethics and fairness in AI that can guide the innovation and design of trustworthy AI systems. With the strong progress in the field and new results being generated, the awareness of methodological problems related to the research has been increasing. A strong need has arisen for cooperation and mutual inspiration across various disciplines, as well as for a broad discussion of the nature of relations between various mechanisms of evidence evaluation.

Topics: There is a whole range of important topics related to implementation of moral reasoning in artificial intelligence driven tools. In particular: the discussion of the suitability of existing ethical theories for autonomous devices, how to take into consideration and represent in a computable way human dignity, freedom, fairness, and other human values, how to reason with them, to which extent it is possible or desirable, which AI paradigm is most suitable for representing the moral decision making process, how to integrate knowledge and data-driven systems in order to justify moral reasons of decisions, how to evaluate a particular state of affairs in the light of moral values, and so on. The workshop will be divided into two separate, but closely related tracks: BEFAIR2 will be focused on the legal issues, problems of fairness, and biases, while EMAI will be focused on technical aspects of ethics in artificial intelligence.
