Large Language Models (LLMs) are presently being applied in many diverse domains. Particularly in the legal domain, LLMs are increasingly being used by researchers for many diverse tasks, including statutory reasoning, annotation of legal text, contract drafting, legal text generation, and so on. Furthermore, despite cautions issued by the U.S. Federal judiciary and guidelines established by the European Bar Association, legal practitioners are starting to rely upon LLMs as well. However, there continue to be concerns about various potential risks that can arise from the application of LLMs in the legal domain. For instance, LLMs are known to generate inconsistent text and exhibit various social biases that can be particularly harmful in the legal domain.
This journal special issue aims to produce a set of seminal papers that focuses on the application and impact of LLMs in the legal domain, as well as the ethical issues and risks that are potentially involved.
